In Summary

An Engineering Services Manager will be capable of managing the performance a wide range of mechanical/electrical equipment and associated services in commercial/industrial scale facilities throughout the entire system life cycle.

This will involve liaison with designers/consultants, contracting companies, installation/commissioning/maintenance personnel, statutory agencies and end-users. Key elements include the planning of activities, the identification and management of resources required and performance optimisation given due consideration to technical, commercial and safety/environmental aspects.

The Manager will be practised in the supervision of the work of others and in communication with the various stakeholders involved in new project installations and/or in the management of existing facilities.

Entry Requirements

Minimum of L6 Advanced Craft Certificate in an engineering services related discipline or equivalent.

Candidates will be subject to a qualifying selection process to determine their suitability based on their work experience and level of academic attainment.

Training

This is a 60 Credit add-on degree and will be delivered over a two year period (4 semesters). All applicants must be employed as apprentices by SOLAS-approved employers progressing to roles of higher responsibility within their organisations.

Taught modules will be delivered in MTU Cork and will require attendance for one full day per week (Fridays during term times) with occasional Saturday classes as required. There is a large emphasis on work-based learning and participants will need to demonstrate their competence as Engineering Service Managers in the Industry Practice modules that make up on third of the programme overall.

Skills & Qualities

  • Work effectively as an individual in teams and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team and be competent in both written and oral communication
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the wider social, business and economic contexts of Engineering Services, including an appreciation of the ethical/legal issues involved
  • Identify and address learning needs at the personal and professional level within a structured learning environment and develop an awareness of continued professional development

Work Activities

  • Apply project planning techniques to manage projects of a complex nature in a timely and cost-effective manner
  • Apply lean management principles in a construction setting
  • Develop the necessary skills to take on the responsibility for the supervision of the work of others in terms of quality, adherence to safe work practices and regulatory compliance
  • Develop cost estimates based on bill of quantities production and demonstrate capabilities in the areas of contract management, cost management and procurement
  • Develop and implement applied Engineering Services solutions and evaluate systems performance against specifications
  • Be competent in the use of industry-standard software and applicable IT infrastructure/tools.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of technologies and practices relevant to the effective delivery and management of Engineering Services installations.

This apprenticeship will facilitate transfer and progression to cognate Level 8 programmes in Engineering, Technology and Management. - The programme will provide a new option for craftspeople to progress to roles of greater responsibility using a structured pathway into supervisory and management positions building on their area of core competencies and work experience.

Getting an Apprenticeship

To become an apprentice in Ireland you must be hired by an employer. Apprenticeship employers are formally approved by SOLAS in advance of employing apprentices. Apprentices get a formal contract of employment as part of their apprenticeship.

Pay & Fees

As an apprentice, you earn while you learn. The employer pays you a salary while you are being trained on-the-job and off-the-job. The rate of pay is agreed between you and your employer

FEES

Apprentices complete their off-the-job training in a higher education institution, for which they are required to pay a student contribution.

The amount payable is a proportion of the annual student contribution for students attending a full-time course in higher education. The student contribution is paid directly to the higher education institution over the two years.
