In Summary

A Supply Chain Manager needs to be able to aggregate and manage these various physical and virtual value chains to maximise the competitiveness of the company.  Stepping above procurement and scheduling, transport and logistics, the Supply Chain Manager needs to be able to manage activities across the value chain, including: headquarters, shared services/global business centres, customer contact/technical support, research and development, and geographically dispersed production.

The programme has a taught element of 10 modules (60ects),) and a company project thesis (30ects). There are additional industry based seminars and company visits to explore Supply Chain practice in Irish enterprises.

Entry Requirements

Your employer must support your application.

Minimum requirements for a Supply Chain Manager Apprenticeship are typically a 2.2 honours degree in a relevant area and related disciplines.

Applicants who have completed a level 8 apprenticeship in a cognate field are also eligible to apply.

The consortium would also facilitate recognition of prior learning (RPL) and would recognise candidates with a lower qualifications provided they have considerable industrial experience, and evidence of the ability to study at Masters level.

Applicants also need to meet the University of Limerick English language requirements.

Training

The learning material is delivered by a combination of academic subject matter experts from the University of Limerick and industry professionals.

Programme delivery is by online learning which incorporates a combination of self‐instructional materials (i.e. On‐line lectures, student guide, interactive learning elements, core texts and recommended readings), and regular webinars and online tutorials. The student are supported by a web‐based, on‐line learning platform, which provides a learning environment for each module along with course updates, hyperlinks and URLs for further research, examination and assessment, electronic library and on‐line collaboration.  

This flexibility is favoured by participants and industry, it also allows practitioners in Supply Chain Management, workshops and seminars while in professional practice.  The programme is structured for blended delivery which minimizes the time that participants are off the job.  While apprentices’ will engage in significant study time the maximum ratio of on‐the‐job to off‐the‐job is 75/25.

1 day per module per semester for taught elements and project support workshops. These are on a weekday on Campus in UL.  

Additionally 1 day every 2 months for company visits and enterprise seminars during the week.

There is also a summer school in year one this is 5 days in duration. In total the off the job delivery is 20 days in total. Additional time should be agreed with your employer for study and participation on online learning activities to a maximum of 25% of the participants working time.

 

 

Skills & Qualities

  • Provide guidance and direction on the implementation of new innovative methodologies for improving forecasting and planning, purchasing, procurement, logistics, operations, inventory management, customer service, transport, distribution or warehousing.  
  • Identify best practice and review resource strategy and residual inventory valuation and inventory pooling.
  • Implements and direct change management strategies to future proof supply chain operational issues.
  • Lead strategic resolution to day to day recurring problems
  • Have a degree qualification or considerable industrial experience in the field

Work Activities

  • Evaluate the impact of upstream and downstream entities on supply chain performance.
  • Influence performance of upstream and downstream factors to maximise value within the organisation's supply chain
  • Diagnose the priority improvement opportunities within the supply chain optimising the trade‐offs between quality, cost and delivery
  • Display specialised technical, analytical and creative skills that are fundamental to problem solving and decision making in the particular context of supply chain management
  • Design supply chains to maximise value for the organisation.

Note: People in employment have a number of options for both Educational and Career Progression. It might also be possible to gain promotion within your existing company.  By using your existing qualifications and your experience you might to able to secure an alternative position in a more senior role in another company. It may also be possible to set up your own company based again on your existing qualifications and experience.  Whatever route you decide to take remember education is a lifelong pursuit and you can always continue to up skill and/or retrain, whatever your age.  Links to some enterprise supports can be found below. 

Progression pathways for programmes would be to the next NFQ level up. As the Supply Chain Manager is an NFQ Level 9 the natural progression would be to the L10 Principal Engineer Apprenticeship. - Supply Chain Manager Level 9 to Principal Engineer Level 10.

Finding an employer and securing your apprenticeship

Finding an employer or registering your interest with an official Coordinating Provider is one of the first things you need to do to start an apprenticeship.

Pay & Fees

As an apprentice, you earn while you learn. The employer pays you a salary while you are being trained on-the-job and off-the-job. The rate of pay is agreed between you and your employer.

Apprentices complete their off-the-job training in a higher education institution, for which they are required to pay a student contribution.

The amount payable is a proportion of the annual student contribution for students attending a full-time course in higher education. The student contribution is paid directly to the higher education institution over the 2 years.

In addition to this there is a student registration fee of €35.
