Kenneth Henry: Graduate in Tax

My Story

My name is Kenneth Henry and I am a tax assistant in Deloitte’s Corporate Tax Department.

As an undergraduate, I completed a degree in Business Studies and French in Trinity College, Dublin, specialising in strategic management and international business. Over the course of my studies I also participated in the Erasmus Exchange Programme and completed a Masters in Management in ESCP Europe in Paris.

Prior to joining Deloitte, I studied for the Professional Diploma in Accounting in DCU.

Why Deloitte?
When I was looking to apply for the various graduate programmes available in the different firms across Dublin, Deloitte’s reputation as a leading graduate recruiter stood out to me as a key reason to apply to join Deloitte.

At the time, I was eager to join a firm which provided me with a supportive, open and collaborative environment and would allow me to develop my strengths, harness my skills, acquire new competencies and aide me in making that transition from graduate to business services professional.

Following conversations with friends and colleagues I quickly learned that Deloitte had exactly the kind of tailored, supportive and structured programme I wanted and I applied without delay!

Why Tax?
What attracted me to working in corporate tax is the fact that in a fast paced and dynamic global business environment, companies – large and small – depend more than ever on quality advice in an ever changing tax environment. As a student of international business, I was fully aware of the extraordinary impact a country’s corporate tax regime can have in informing business decisions and strategy, encouraging innovation and investment and developing a socially responsible and enterprising economy.

I was eager to become directly involved in helping businesses face these challenges and so I strongly believed an advisory career in Tax would greatly help complement the research, business and communication skills I developed in University.

Whether you’re a complete novice to all things tax, or would like to develop your existing skills, as long as you’re ready to learn and eager to assist clients keep abreast of some of the most topical issues in international business, then a career in Deloitte’s Tax department is the place for you! Life at Deloitte Many graduates apply to firms with no idea of what it is really like to work in a professional services firm like Deloitte.

I hope to fill you in on some of the things I wish I knew before joining Deloitte! As a corporate tax assistant, you are working in a challenging and varied role. On my first day in the office I was provided with my own client allocation listing. These clients are spread across all industries and sectors.

From large Irish corporates in the retail, technology and food sectors to aircraft leasing companies and securitisation vehicles in the financial services industry, it is my responsibility to take ownership of my client allocation and assist each of my clients meet their corporation tax obligations.

The type of work you are involved in as a member of the corporate tax team is both diverse and engaging. One day you could be preparing corporation tax computations and researching legislation to drafting reports on the tax issues facing your clients the next. At first this can seem daunting but I was strongly encouraged by the great level of support and training provided every step of the way by all members of the corporate tax team at manager, director and partner level.

Outside the Office

From the Christmas Ball to the Summer BBQ; to trips away with the large variety of societies and sports clubs, there is so much on offer no matter what your interests!

Deloitte strongly encourages all graduate recruits to get involved in as many of the social events and extra opportunities and activities on offer! In March 2016,

Deloitte hosted an ‘Innovation Day’ with the UCD Innovation Academy as part of its industry immersion programme. I was extremely fortunate to be involved in this exciting project.

For one day, over one hundred students joined us here at Deloitte to work on a project developing innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. It was a great opportunity to meet people from all kinds of academic backgrounds and industries!

Furthermore, you will also be glad to know that Deloitte organises a huge suite of social events throughout the year. From the Christmas Ball to the Summer BBQ to trips away with the large variety of societies and sports clubs, there is so much on offer no matter what your interests!

Overall I am thoroughly enjoying my time in Deloitte and would highly recommend all graduates of all disciplines, to apply to join the firm. Whether it is the quality of training, the leadership opportunities available for new recruits, the open, collaborative and friendly culture or the structured and personalised exam support programme, Deloitte truly is a great place to start your career and reach your potential Deloitte values creativity and the innovation that it can spark.

There were three factors in me choosing Deloitte:

The first was the reputation of the Strategy & Operations Consulting practice.

The second is that Deloitte values creativity and the innovation that it can spark. There are really cool things being done in Deloitte Digital and also with new technologies such as Blockchain. The partners are very future-thinking and understand the importance of being a leader for emerging technologies. This year I got to participate in a collaborative industry day between Deloitte and the Innovation Academy at UCD which was a great experience.

The final, and possibly most important, factor was the importance the company places on culture. When I first heard about “culture” it didn’t really mean a lot to me, but I have grown to understand the role it plays in making the day to day work a lot of fun! The people I started with are all quite like-minded and it is a very easy environment to make friends. Even though I chose to begin my career in consulting, engineering is something I really enjoyed and I still use the skills learned during my degree in my job.

Deloitte is accredited by Engineers Ireland, and with the firm, I am looking to work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer. This was definitely something that made Deloitte stand out as it was the only management consulting firm with Engineers Ireland accreditation.
