What I like most about my role
Since joining Deloitte in 2013 as a trainee solicitor I have gained a vast amount of experience in the Financial Services sector and I have worked with a variety of clients. I enjoy the level of responsibility, autonomy and ownership I have been given since day one. I have been given the opportunity to attend meetings with ‘C’suite members, heads of functions, senior management team etc.

I enjoy the variety and opportunity to constantly enhance my knowledge and skills. As is the nature of regulation it is constantly changing and as a result there is constantly an opportunity to learn which keeps you on your toes.

What attracted me to Deloitte?
I graduated from UCD with a degree in Business and Law and I wanted to find a job that would allow me to utilise the skills and knowledge I had developed. This job as a trainee solicitor in Deloitte allowed just this. I had completed regulatory modules as part of my degree and these always interested me. I also had friends who were working in different departments of Deloitte and the feedback was always positive.

Trainees receive an attractive contract which allows for Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) for every additional hour worked, competitive pay, a work life balance and the opportunity to join the many sports and social societies. These were all factors which made Deloitte stand out.

What I didn’t know but wish I knew before joining!
Firstly, I wasn’t aware that Deloitte hired Trainee Solicitors… they DO!! Similarly, I wasn’t fully aware of the great opportunities for career progression and the opportunity progress internally. As a graduate you are joining a team with Seniors Consultants, Assistant Managers, Managers, Senior Managers, Directors and Partners.

Our team in particular is growing year on year so there is great opportunity to advance your career There are defined learning pathways set out for each trainee that joins the firm.  Progressing from Trainee 1 to Trainee 2 to Trainee 3 and now to a Senior Consultant, I have steadily taken on more responsibility and learned about managing others, report writing, how to manage client relations, expectations and much more..

My day-to-day role
My day to day role would vary greatly depending on the type of project or client that I am working on. Currently I am working with the compliance function of a Bank assisting in the development of compliance frameworks, policies and procedures. This involves meeting with the key client stakeholders to get an overview of the current processes, input on what is required and walkthroughs of current processes.

I have also worked with the financial regulator on themed regulatory inspections which gave me great insight into the expectations of the regulator with regard to Anti-Money Laundering Requirements
