Life at Deloitte

Jack English – Risk Advisory, Technology Assurance Graduate

I was studying for my undergraduate degree in Business Information System (BIS) in UCC and as part of the course; I was required to complete a six-month internship. I was given the opportunity to join the Technology Assurance team within the Risk Advisory department in Deloitte. I had a great experience working in Deloitte over the six months as an intern and this encouraged me to apply to the graduate programme.

After graduating from BIS I returned to the Risk Advisory department taking up a graduate position in the Technology Assurance team.  I was welcomed back by the familiar faces and friends that I had made on my internship and in addition, was introduced to over 100 analysts across multiple departments during the graduate induction-training programme.

As a member of the Technology Assurance team, I work on reviews to identify the risks and the controls that companies have or need to have in place in order to manage or address IT risks. Companies depend on information systems to provide complete, accurate and valid data, but these systems may be the source of considerable risk if not well deployed, monitored and controlled.

We work closely with our clients while conducting IT audits. This involves meeting with clients to test a range of different technologies and processes to ensure robust and secure controls are in place to address IT risk. The types of technologies I work with include SAP, SQL, Oracle, Windows AD, out of the box and custom built applications, and many more.  The skills and knowledge I learned from my degree provide me with a good foundation to carry out this type of work. Our team is made up of people with a wide range of degrees and knowledge which allows me to learn and develop on a day to day basis.

During my time at Deloitte I have had the chance to work with a range of different clients across a number of different industries including: transport, finance, banking, insurance and retail. I find this experience great as I get to know how a range of technologies are applied to different business environments and how the different companies operate across industries.

There are many perks working in Deloitte. During the summer we get take a compressed working week where we get to leave the office early on a Friday. There are also a number of sport and social clubs in Deloitte to get involved in. In my first year, I went on surf trip to Bundoran along with 50 other colleagues and there are many trips abroad organised annually.

In addition, each year Deloitte has an Impact Day, a day where everyone gets the opportunity to participate in a project to reach out to the local community. This can include gardening, painting, cooking and strategy workshops and many more different activities.

Overall I have enjoyed my time at Deloitte. I am gaining invaluable experience working with great people expanding my knowledge on a daily basis.
