Sinead Hodgins - Health & Safety Advisor

As part of the #BuildingEquality 2018 Campaign, Sinead Hodgins, Health & Safety Advisor with Flynn Management and Contractors, shares her story as a woman in construction.Hailing from a family background in construction, I was always adamant to pursue a career within the fast pace market of commercial construction. I initially studied and practiced Business Management and began to merge a career in Health and Safety studying through the NEBOSH International training when I joined the Flynn team over 2 years ago.

As well as an avid runner and fan of coastal beaches, I’m passionate about my role and I’m committed to exceeding industry standards in promoting a proactive health and safety culture on each project. The main aspect of my job satisfaction is when I can see an improvement in the health and safety culture on a project.

Working with Flynn you have an opportunity to collaborate with a highly skilled workforce that are passionate and exhibit both personal and professional pride in the work they do. I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to build some fantastic relationships both internally and externally within the organisation.

Senior Management within the organisation have made a massive impact on my progression, particularly the mentoring I received from Edel Corrigan when I first joined Flynn. I was extremely fortunate to have the exposure to learn from her work ethic and continuous encouragement, which gave me the confidence and my ability to lead projects and site teams.

Flynn really gave me the platform to show my capabilities and let me stand on my own and I suppose the results proved that I could do it. They’re very proactive in individual development and encouraging people to perform to their best capability.

It’s a challenging job, but it’s extremely rewarding. The construction industry is very competitive and it challenges you to perform to your maximum ability. You start seeing how much you can actually do and how much you can actually achieve and there’s always a ladder to climb.
