So, what do they do?

Software Engineers develop, create, and modify general computer applications software or specialised utility programs including operating systems.  They can work with huge systems such as Windows and iOS down to smaller systems such as on the payroll systems for smaller companies.  They work with their clients to agree on important issues such as the hardware and software they need, costs and deadlines.  They then write the programmes and test for bugs, correcting any problems they find.  

What type of person would make a good Software Engineer?

Successful Software Engineers should have a high aptitude for computers, enjoy problem solving and have a logical, analytical and methodical approach to their work.  A keen attention to detail and commitment to seeing a job through until the finish is also key.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are also required in order to work as part of a larger team and also with clients.

OK, so how do I become a Software Engineer?

It will be necessary to have a degree in Computer Science, ideally specialising in Software Engineering.  GMIT have a specific degree in Software and Electronic Engineering which also has links through the PLC pathway.  Maynooth University also offers a Computer Science and Software Engineering degree as part of their science offerings.

Throughout the country there are also many Further Education options in relation this career area.

Most interviews for Software Engineers will place a great emphasis on testing your skills, whether through practical exercises, case studies or by presenting specific problems to solve during interviews.

Computing professionals with several years of experience can gain Chartered Engineer or Associate Engineer status through Engineers Ireland.

 

Finally, are there jobs and what’s the pay like?!

In the most recent National Skills Bulletin, Software Engineer has been identified as a Job in Demand.  There are approximately 14,900 Software Engineer jobs in the country with salary rates ranging from €45k - €90k.  Higher salaries are awarded relevant to positions of authority and size of company.
