So, what do they do?

Biochemists examine how chemical processes impact living organisms.  They can investigate how a disease develops and spreads. Their research then assists with the investigation diagnosis and treatment of diseases.  In their research, biochemists may work with chemists, biologists, pharmacists and medical doctors.  Biochemists in the agrochemical industry help develop products like insecticides and fertilisers.

What type of person would make a good Biochemist?

As a biochemist, you must be able to think logically and possess an enquiring mind.  You will need a thorough and methodical approach to your work, and be able to plan and use practical experiments very accurately.  Good communication skills for working in a team as well as the ability to work independently.

OK, so how do I become a Biochemist?

Biochemists will typically hold a degree in Biochemistry, or a related science degree with a substantial amount of biochemical content.  Most Universities and Institutes of Technology offer Bioscience courses.  For research posts a postgraduate qualification like a MSc or PhD is the typical requirement while some employers may offer employees the opportunity to study part-time while in employment.

Finally, are there jobs and what’s the pay like?!

According to the latest Labour Market Information, Biochemists are a job in demand, with employment growth high.  There are approximately 18,200 employed in the industry across the sectors.  Salary rates vary according to experience and responsibility with positions in Dublin often commanding higher salaries which can range from €23k - €100k.
