Automation Engineer

So, what do they do?

Automation Engineers work to simplify manufacturing processes as much as possible, making them more efficient and cost effective.  The technology they work with varies greatly depending on the type of manufacturing process.  It could involve pumps, robotics, electrical systems, rotors, heating systems or piping systems.  The automation engineer takes responsibility for the design, upkeep and improvement of the automation process.

What type of person would make a good Automation Engineer?

Automation engineers need knowledge across mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering and manufacturing technology.  They need to be able to think in an orderly and logical manner and possess a high level of problem solving skills.  An ability to think about systems is vital, as designing an automated process requires understanding the relationships between each step in the system.  Advanced computer skills are also a key requirement.

OK, so how do I become an Automation Engineer?

An undergraduate qualification in one of automation, process control, robotics, manufacturing engineering, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering is the best pathway into automation engineering.  There are postgraduate options available for those looking to specialise further.

Finally, are there jobs and what’s the pay like?!
