Virologist

So, what do they do?

Virologists are specialists on viruses and viral infections, such as those that cause colds, flus and COVID-19. They can be both scientists and medical doctors and may study viruses that affect humans or study viral infections in other animals.  Virologists can be involved in the treatment, and prevention of viral infection while also pushing forward research on viruses known and unknown.

What type of person would make a good Virologist?

A good virologist should be someone who is scientifically minded, particularly with Biology and Chemistry.  They should be critical thinkers and have the ability to analyse and process large amounts of data and information.  They should also have advanced laboratory skills and be able to work under pressure often as part of a team.

OK, so how do I become a Virologist?

There is no undergraduate degree in Ireland that offers virology as a major.  However, many science courses offer modules in virology so interested students should carefully research the options available on science courses.  Degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology or Biomedical sciences are all potential pathways to progressing to a postgraduate qualification in virology.

Finally, are there jobs and what’s the pay like?!
