SETU - Recreation and Sport Management Graduate

Craig Dunphy a former De La Salle college, Waterford student recently graduated from the rec man course in SETU in Waterford. During a time in SETU in Waterford Craig was a sport scholarship student and a member of the CFAI winning soccer club. Craig has used his experience in  SETU in Waterford to help further his studied by perusing a masters in SETU in Carlow.

What attracted you to study at Waterford Institute of Technology?

The facilities in  SETU in Waterford especially the sports campus in Carriganore which was officially opened as the SETU Waterford Campus Arena in my first year of college. The locality of the college to my house which was five minutes walking distance was a major selling point for me and the reputation that the college had from talking to students who would have come through the course and the college before I came in.

Did you always know this was the course you wanted to do?

I knew I always wanted to work in sports but didn't know what area when I first came out of school, I applied for all 3 sports courses here, recreation amd sports management, sport coaching and performance and exercise and health. When applying through the CAO I received a reserved place on the recreation and sports management course for outstanding sporting achievement prior to my time in SETU in Waterford. When this place was reserved for me I looked more in the recreation and sports management and really like the thought of 50/50 with sport and business.

What words of advice do you have for new students?

Get to know people by joining a club or society but also get to know your lectures because they are there to help you and the will go head over heels to help you achieve your goal in college. What have been the highlights of your college experience? Winning the CFAI cup with the soccer team in 2019 was one of the top highlights but also going into college everyday knowing at some stage you will have a smile on your face even when you least expect it.

How did work placement add to your college experience?

Getting real world experience through work placement in second year really help me focus in third and fourth year to know what path I wanted to take when I finish the course in SETU in Waterford. What are you doing now? I was always intending on doing a postgraduate degree after I finished my undergraduate program. I am currently a student on the MSc in Sports Performance Analysis in SETU in Carlow for the coming year.

How did your experience at  SETU in Waterford help get you to where you are now?

The help shown by everyone from the staff in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science to the team in the SETU in Waterford Viking Sports Office who gave me every chance to do my best in everything I have done. I will be forever grateful of their help.
