Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprenticeship

Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprenticeship

What does a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic do?

Heavy Vehicle Mechanics work on trucks, buses, coaches and other heavy vehicles. Each vehicle is serviced after a specified length of time or kilometres, to replace, repair or adjust any worn parts and generally check, tune and adjust for good performance.

Mechanics perform routine checks where they change oil, and check and adjust brakes and steering. They also repair and replace any faulty items they find.  Heavy Vehicle Mechanics usually cover the mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic aspects of vehicles while auto-electricians specialise in their electrical and electronic systems.

What skills and qualities are needed to become a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic?

A heavy vehicle mechanic should typically be someone who has a strong mechanical aptitude, likes problem solving and enjoys working with their hands.  The nature of the job means that a good level of physical fitness is required as is an aptitude for handling tools and machinery.  Communication skills are very important when dealing with other mechanics and customers in order to explain faults and repairs.  As vehicles evolve, an ability to change and keep up-to-date with new technologies is important.  Good computer skills and knowledge of vehicle electronics is also desirable.  You must also pass a colour blindness test for this apprenticeship.

Where will I be based for my Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job training and off-the-job training with the schedule agreed between the employer, the apprentice and your local ETB.  The Heavy Vehicle Mechanic apprenticeship is four years in duration and most of your learning done on the job in the garage or workshop with a Master Mechanic, with three phases of full-time study in between.

What is the Pay/Job market like?

As an apprentice, you earn while you learn.  The employer will pay you a salary while you are being trained.  The rate of pay is agreed between you and your employer.  Qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic salaries range between €22k - €39k per year.  Salaries can rise according to experience.

How do I secure an Apprenticeship contract?

To become an apprentice you must first secure an employer who is willing to take on an Apprentice.  There are several ways that you can go about finding a suitable placement.  Many students can make use of their work experience during TY, leave a good impression and then approach the employer and ask to be taken on.  Spend time on your CV and work on your interview skills and approach employers in your area.
