Accounting Technician Apprenticeship

What does an Accounting Technician do?

Accounting Technicians are qualified accounting professionals employed throughout all levels of finance. They are not qualified accountants but they are involved in the day-to-day practical work of accounting including Bookkeeping, Financial Accounting & Budgeting, Costing & Credit Control, Payroll Administration and Tax Returns.  Qualified Accounting Technicians may prepare company annual budgets and monitor the progress of this throughout the year and assist in the preparation of company year-end financial statements for clients such as Accounting Practice Firms, SME’s and Large organisations, Public Sector organisations and Sole Traders.

What skills and qualities are needed to become an Accounting Technician?

Accounting Technicians are expected to have strong numeracy skills while communication and teamworking skills are also important for communicating with clients and colleagues.  They should also possess a keen attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.  A key requirement of the role is confidentiality and integrity when working with company information.

Where will I be based for my Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job training and off-the-job training with the schedule agreed between the employer, the apprentice and your local ETB.  The Accounting Technician apprenticeship is two years in duration and during college term time apprentices will attend college one day a week with the other four days spent with the employer.  Outside of term time apprentices will attend work five days a week.

What is the Pay/Job market like?

As an apprentice, you earn while you learn.  The employer will pay you a salary of at least €19,700 per year while you are being trained.  The rate of pay is agreed between you and your employer.  College tuition fees are fully funded by SOLAS and apprentices are not required to pay a student contribution.  Qualified Accounting Technician salaries range between €22k - €39k per year and these salaries can rise according to experience.

How do I secure an Apprenticeship contract?

The main criteria for entry is 300 CAO points with a Pass (O6) in Leaving Certificate English and either Maths or Accounting.  PLC students and Mature applicants (over 23’s) are also eligible to apply.  Finding an employer or registering your interest with an official Coordinating Provider is one of the first things you need to do to start an apprenticeship.  Those interested in applying to become an Accounting Technician apprentice can register their interest here.
