Sales Apprenticeship

What work does a Salesperson do?

Sales People, Sales Representatives and Sales Executives are all involved in the selling of goods and services to individuals or other businesses and organisations.  Sales people are employed in a wide range of areas and can operate from shops or offices as well as travelling to meet potential customers and clients.

Depending on the type of selling involved, sales people will typically specialise in one product or service and develop an extensive knowledge of this.  There may also be the requirement to perform demonstrations of the product or service, give explanations or answer any questions that the customer might have.  The organisation of sales contracts and dealing with orders, receipts and follow-up requests are also central elements of the role.

What skills and qualities are needed to become a Salesperson?

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for a successful career in sales.  Sales people should also be confident, enthusiastic, friendly and above all, persuasive individuals.  You must have excellent customer service skills to be able to communicate clearly and get along with people as relationships are key between the company and customers, both new and established.  You should also be a well organised person with strong numeracy skills and have the ability to deal with the associated paperwork.

Where will I be based for my Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job training and off-the-job training with the schedule agreed between the employer, the apprentice and the local ETB.  On the job you will be allocated a workplace mentor.  The proposed ratio of the training in this apprenticeship is 84% on the job learning, 12% of face to face workshops and 4% online learning.

What is the Pay/Job market like?

As an apprentice, you earn while you learn.  The employer will pay you a salary while you are being trained.  The rate of pay is agreed between you and your employer.  Apprentices are not required to pay a student contribution for this apprenticeship.  There are a wide range of industries that this apprenticeship can lead onto including pharmaceuticals, property, insurance, motor and retail.  Qualified Sales Person salaries range between €18k - €55k per year but this can rise considerably if progressing to become a Sales Representative or Sales Executive.

How do I secure an Apprenticeship contract?

To become an apprentice you must first secure an employer who is willing to take on an Apprentice.  There are several ways that you can go about finding a suitable placement.  Many students can make use of their work experience during TY, leave a good impression and then approach the employer and ask to be taken on.  Spend time on your CV and work on your interview skills and approach employers in your area.  Explore our Live apprenticeship area to find out what employers are actively looking for apprentices.
