Arborist Apprenticeship

Arborist Apprenticeship

What work does an Arborist do?

Arborists are more commonly referred to as Tree Surgeons.  Their work involves the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants. They examine trees to assess their condition before determining appropriate action.

An arborist can also carry out tree surveys and site inspections in order to produce reports in relation to tree health and safety, topography, soil type, water table levels and other site constraints.  They can also be employed to supervise contractors and direct labour personnel as part of their role.

What skills and qualities are needed to work in Arboriculture?

A decent level of fitness and agility is required to work as a tree surgeon.  The nature of the work also means that a good head for heights is needed.  Arborists must also have an aptitude for using specialist, and often dangerous, machinery.  The fact that much of the work is performed with chainsaws often while suspended from a tree in a harness means that health and safety is of paramount importance.
