Motor Mechanic Apprenticeship

What work does a Motor Mechanic do?

Motor Mechanics run diagnostics, inspect, repair and service a variety of motor vehicles from motorcycles to domestic cars and other commercial vehicles.  The role of a motor mechanic has changed greatly in recent years with the increasing use of computers and electronic components.  The industry continues to evolve with the ongoing introduction of hybrid and electric vehicles onto the market.  As a result, motor mechanics are increasingly becoming known as Automotive Technicians.

Motor mechanics can work in dealerships, repair shops, NCT test centres or become self-employed by setting up and running their own garages.

What skills and qualities are needed to work as a Motor Mechanic?

Motor Mechanics should be mechanically minded, curious as to how things work and be good with their hands.  The nature of the work requires mechanics to be good problem solvers in order to be able to diagnose and repair the faults.  Mechanics can often also work with colleagues and talk with customers so should have good communication skills.  Increasingly, as the technology has adapted, mechanics are required to be IT literate also.  A good knowledge of Health and Safety is also important due to some of the tools involved and the use of hydraulic lifts.
