What is being a Butcher all about?

So, what does a Butcher do?

Butchers are skilled and hands-on in preparing and placing meat cuts and products in display counters, so they appear attractive and catch the shopper’s eye.As an Apprentice Butcher You will learn and demonstrate the skills of ‘shaping’, ‘lacing’, and ‘tying’ roasts using boning knives, skewers, and twine.In addition to developing culinary skills, craft Butchers will be able to wrap, weigh, label and price cuts of meat.

The Person

Naturalists will prefer working with the end result of nature's produce - the food produced from plants and animals. Naturalists like solving problems with solutions that show some sensitivity to the environmental impact of what they do. They like to see practical results and prefer action.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

Enterprising - Such people may have an opportunistic frame of mind, and are drawn to creative & innovative Careers. They tend to be very goal-oriented and work best when focused on a target. Some have an entrepreneurial inclination.

How to become a Butcher

In order to secure an Apprenticeship, you must first secure employment with an Employer.

Visit Find a Local Employer with Associated Craft Butchers Ireland for details of Your Local Butchers.  This link will give you lots of employers in your area and you can apply directly to any of them.

Another way of finding an apprenticeship is by searching apprenticeship vacancies on the Apprenticeship Jobs Portal. You can search for vacancies by location and by apprenticeship.  For further information visit www.apprenticeship.ie

You must apply directly to an employer rather than the training provider. Once you have found an employer to take you on as an apprentice, your employer must then register you as an apprentice with SOLAS.

  • The employer must be approved to train apprentices.
  • The employer must register you as an apprentice within two weeks of recruitment.
