The Work

Esport organisations gather talented esport athletes and content creators, invest in them through financial supports and training, and capitalise on the exposure when their talent finds success.

An organisation manager is responsible for running the business. They decide which games to participate in, which athletes to sign, and who to hire to help them manage all the necessary work.

It’s also important todevelop and maintain relationships with partners, especially commercial sponsors and brand partnerships.

In 2021, over 60% of the revenue of esport organisations came from commercial sponsorships.

Many organisations promote themselves as a lifestyle brand and make money by selling merchandise and memberships. An organisation manager will also have to weigh in on this part of the business.

The hours for this job can be very demanding, as esports often takes place in the evenings and weekends, while general business happens during the day — sometimes across time sones.

Enterprising

Enterprising people like situations that involve using resources for personal or corporate economic gain. Such people may have an opportunistic frame of mind, and are drawn to commerce, trade and making deals. Some pursue sales and marketing occupations. Many will eventually end up owning their own business, or in management roles in larger organisations. They tend to be very goal-oriented and work best when focused on a target. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Entry - Esport Organisation Manager

To become an organisation manager, it’s important to have a passion for esports, a keen business sense, and a strong network. A natural way to develop these is by running an amateur esport organisation in a voluntary capacity — such as an esports club in a school or college.

There are courses across Europe which specialise in teaching esports and its business elements; these make a great starting point. It’s also possible to transition into esports business from other roles; this is a very common career pathway.
