The Work

Video games allow players to experience all kinds of locations and settings, whether it’s a medieval town, the top of a skyscraper, or the moon!

Environment artists work on the appearance and visuals of a game environment. Their job is to make the setting look good, while matching the tone and style guidelines provided by the design team and art director.

Typical environmental assets might be carpets and floors, barrels and vending machines, the satellite dish on the side of a building, or an interesting piece of architecture. A more complex asset might be interactive, such as a bridge that the player can raise or lower.

These are then assembled into a scene, where environment artists may also contribute towards the lighting.

Work tasks...

  • Create sets of textures which can be applied to 3D models, including texture maps for physically-based rendering.
  • Sculpt assets such as props, walls, and foliage which match the style of the game, and will be used to populate the game environment.
  • Use technologies like photogrammetry to rapidly produce photorealistic assets for game environments.
  • Optimise assets for various devices, so it’s possible to display many on-screen at once without causing performance issues.
  • Collaborate with level designers to ensure that all necessary assets will be created on-time, and that effort is centred on the assets which are most important.

Most commonly reported Work Tasks

  • Design complex graphics and animation, using independent judgment, creativity, and computer equipment.
  • Create basic designs, drawings, and illustrations for product labels, cartons, direct mail, or television.
  • Participate in design and production of multimedia campaigns, handling budgeting and scheduling, and assisting with such responsibilities as production coordination, background design, and progress tracking.
  • Create two-dimensional and three-dimensional images depicting objects in motion or illustrating a process, using computer animation or modeling programs.
  • Make objects or characters appear lifelike by manipulating light, color, texture, shadow, and transparency, or manipulating static images to give the illusion of motion.
  • Apply story development, directing, cinematography, and editing to animation to create storyboards that show the flow of the animation and map out key scenes and characters.
  • Implement and maintain configuration control systems.
  • Script, plan, and create animated narrative sequences under tight deadlines, using computer software and hand drawing techniques.
  • Develop briefings, brochures, multimedia presentations, web pages, promotional products, technical illustrations, and computer artwork for use in products, technical manuals, literature, newsletters, and slide shows.
  • Create and install special effects as required by the script, mixing chemicals and fabricating needed parts from wood, metal, plaster, and clay.

Qualities - Game Environment Artist

Being a creative is essential towards being able to capture and represent the mood and atmosphere in a real or fictional location though its game assets.

Environment art can be beautiful in its own right, but must serve as the background for gameplay. Strong communication skills will be needed to connect with other disciplines, and ensure aesthetics do not interfere with gameplay. A good sense of narrative and storytelling is also welcome, as a game’s environment can also be a vessel for this.

Making art for games can be surprisingly technical, so be ready to learn how to use lots of digital tools, and constantly evolving techniques.
