The Work

Also known as: retail assistant; retail sales assistant; retail associate; retail sales advisor; sales assistant; shop assistant; or store assistant, the work of this occupation varies according to the type of outlet concerned.

In department stores and specialist shops such as electrical goods or homeware stores, sales assistants focus on selling particular products. Some shops are self-service with the assistant remaining at a checkout or sales counter.

As well as assisting and serving customers, retail assistants may be required to operate cash tills and take payments from customers for goods purchased. They may have to deal with cash, cheques, and credit or debit cards. Goods may have to be weighed and packed, and sometimes gift-wrapped.  
 
Retail sales assistants maintain displays of goods on shelves and check that goods are correctly priced. They also advise or persuade customers on purchases, answer customer queries, or direct customers to the location of a product. They may be responsible for stock control and keeping financial and stock records.

Experience as a general sales/retail assistant can lead to a career in retail management.

Retail assistants should always have a neat and tidy appearance, should remain polite and helpful. They should enjoy dealing and working with other people. They should also be able to work on their own initiative and as part of a team.  
 
You need to be approachable, helpful, friendly and co-operative when dealing with customers. This requires strong interpersonal and communication skills. You need to be patient as you may have to deal with customer complaints and customers being awkward.  
 
A good general health and fitness is required for this job.

Labour Market Updates - Sales Assistant - Retail

This information has been derived from the Solas National Skills Bulletin (2023).

Despite a below average growth rate, employment for sales assistants grew by 8,700 persons between 2021 and 2022 in line with the recovery in the wholesale and retail sector. However, recent job hires far exceeded any growth in employment pointing to significant job churn for this occupation.

This is likely to be related to the young profile of workers in this occupation (44% were aged 15-24 years) and the majority (58%) being in part-time roles. There was a large volume of vacancies advertised through DSP Jobs Ireland and OVATE. Job opportunities are likely to continue to arise for this occupation given its large size and the volume of turnover.
