The Work

Heating and ventilating fitters install, maintain and repair central heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in industrial and commercial buildings. There are some similarities with plumbers' work but heating and ventilating fitters work on very large-scale equipment.

Installation work is carried out in premises such as office blocks, hospitals, factories and power stations. Heating and ventilating fitters install very large boilers, tanks, refrigeration systems, pipes, and pumps and controls. When they've installed the equipment they must test it and make sure that it is working efficiently and safely.

Their main job is fitting pipe work to carry hot water, other liquids or gas. Fitters use bending machines to shape the larger pipes that can be up to 50 centimetres in diameter. They use flame-cutting equipment to cut them to the correct sise. They usually work from drawings showing the planned layout of the whole system. Systems must be tested. Some fitters set up service and maintenance programmes for clients.

Maintenance and repair work includes routine servicing and emergency repairs. In repair work, heating and ventilating fitters must find faults in the systems, replace or repair any damaged parts, carry out tests and make sure that the system works properly.

Most commonly reported Work Tasks

  • Test electrical circuits or components for continuity, using electrical test equipment.
  • Repair or replace defective equipment, components, or wiring.
  • Discuss heating or cooling system malfunctions with users to isolate problems or to verify that repairs corrected malfunctions.
  • Connect heating or air conditioning equipment to fuel, water, or refrigerant source to form complete circuit.
  • Install, connect, or adjust thermostats, humidistats, or timers.
  • Comply with all applicable standards, policies, or procedures, such as safety procedures or the maintenance of a clean work area.
  • Study blueprints, design specifications, or manufacturers' recommendations to ascertain the configuration of heating or cooling equipment components and to ensure the proper installation of components.
  • Install auxiliary components to heating or cooling equipment, such as expansion or discharge valves, air ducts, pipes, blowers, dampers, flues, or stokers.
  • Brase or solder parts to repair defective joints and leaks.
  • Lay out and connect electrical wiring between controls and equipment, according to wiring diagrams, using electrician's hand tools.

Labour Market Updates - Heating and Ventilating Fitter

This occupation has been identified as a Job in Demand by the most recent National Skills Bulletin.

This information has been derived from the Solas National Skills Bulletin (2023).

Although employment has increased annually since 2020, employment levels in 2022 remained below pre-COVID-19 levels. New employment permits issued related to both plumbers and plumbing, heating and ventilation engineers. The DFHERIS report suggests that demand for plumbers for housing projects will peak in 2024 but, with retrofitting projects accelerating from 2026, a significant demand for plumbers is likely to persist.

New apprenticeship registration numbers in 2022, at 792, were above pre-COVID-19 levels and the number of persons achieving the craft apprenticeship award (plumber) more than doubled between 2016 and 2021, going from 113 to 238.

Shortages for plumbers are likely to continue, at least in the short-term, as supply from the education/training system is yet to meet annual recruitment requirements. In addition, those already trained as plumbers will also require re-/upskilling opportunities in order to carry out work linked to alternative renewable energy sources (e.g. the installation of heat pumps).
