About Us

Ireland’s first transregional university – Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest.

TUS comprises a student population of more than 14,000 and a staff complement of approximately 2,000 people working fulltime and part-time across an extensive footprint spanning six campuses in Athlone, Limerick (Moylish and Limerick School of Art and Design), Clonmel, Ennis and Thurles.

The university will be driving development and investment across the Midlands and Midwest with a consolidation of expertise that will further strengthen its competitiveness. The status and recognition of being a Technological University will enable TUS to offer a more diverse range of research and to award degrees in new areas of speciality, while it will remain committed to retaining and building upon its ethos of providing higher education to all those who would benefit from it.

Multi-Campus Institute

LIT’s five campuses across Limerick, Tipperary and Clare open up third level education opportunities to students across the mid-west region. As well as campuses in Limerick City, our regional campuses in Thurles and Clonmel, along with our Education Centre in Ennis allow students to access higher education without having to travel to more expensive locations outside the region. Limerick is one of the most affordable cities in Ireland for student accommodation.

Facilities

At LIT, we are committed to providing students with the best resources and facilities to enhance their learning experience. Facilities across the campuses include Library and Information Services, Computer Services, Campus Restaurants, Banking Services, Medical Centre (Limerick), Student Parking facilities, and Sports facilities.

Clubs & Societies

Alongside a vibrant academic environment, LIT boasts a lively clubs and societies scene, ensuring that many sporting interests are catered for and all students are encouraged to get involved in the numerous extra-curricular activities across the campuses. Our clubs cater for all levels of activity and students can get involved at their own pace, whether someone is an elite athlete, a beginner or just looking to get fit and have fun. We participate in many inter-varsity competitions allowing students to represent the college in national competitions.

Information Technology

Hundreds of open access computers are provided around the campuses and wireless access is everywhere so that students can use their own laptop to surf the internet. We provide all students with a user account to access all our services, including an LIT email address, which can be used anywhere. Student web portals and online learning systems are provided so that students can download programme notes and past exam papers.

At the Moylish, Limerick campus, the main concentration of computers is in the Computer Centre, which opens from 8am to 10pm and there are Helpdesk services in this areas. At the Thurles and Clonmel campuses, computers are available in the libraries and the Computer Services team is also available to assist students with any queries. Sports & Fitness

LIT has an impressive range of sports facilities for students, and in Limerick these facilities include three full size pitches and an all-weather playing pitch, as well as a fitness centre and indoor sports hall. The Thurles campus houses our state-of-the-art SportsLab, a purpose built strength and conditioning facility. The 2,000 sq.metre facility includes a 3D Organic Motion Capture System for motion analysis, a 45m six lane sprint track specifically designed to improve speed; a Paralympic area, cable machines, a range of sport technology systems, etc.

 

Dining

Restaurant facilities are available across all campuses and serve a variety of hot meals and other refreshments at competitive prices. Our student canteens aim to provide affordable food of a high nutritional value. Several vending machines also offer a variety of snacks and beverages. The LIT Merchandise shop allows students to buy stationery and merchandise items for college use at competitive prices.  

 

Fees and Grants

Currently, tuition fees at LIT are covered by the terms of the government’s Free Fees Scheme. Under this scheme, the government pays tuition fees for full-time, non-repeat undergraduate students from Ireland & other EU countries that have been resident in an EU country for three of the last five years. A Student Contribution Fee is payable by non-grant aided students, which covers Student Services, Registration, Examination Fees, etc.

LIT’s campuses in Limerick and Thurles are well served by Irish Rail services, while the Clonmel and Ennis campus locations are served by the Bus Eireann network and other private operators. Students can avail of special travel rates from the national transport companies and chartered buses.

 

The Moylish campus is regularly serviced by the 302 Intercity bus service, which departs every 20 minutes directly outside the front of the building.
