About Us

Mary Immaculate College (MIC), founded in 1898, is a University-level College of Education and the Liberal Arts, academically linked with the University of Limerick. The College is a multi-campus institution, with a student population of over 5,000 students enrolled in undergraduate programmes in Drama and English, English Language and Literature, Psychology, Primary and Post-Primary Teaching, Liberal Arts, and Early Childhood Care and Education, as well as a range of postgraduate programmes in Education and Arts at Diploma, MA and PhD levels.

Scholarships

Here at MIC, we have a suite of scholarships for incoming undergraduate students that are designed to assist you as you embark on your third-level journey.

Each year, we award up to 50 Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships, valued at €2,000 each, on the basis of results obtained in the Irish Leaving Certificate Examination. Only performance in the six best subjects taken at the same sitting of the Leaving Certificate will be counted. No special application form is required for Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships. Successful students will be notified directly.

The Ashling Murphy Scholarship, in memory of MIC graduate, Ashling Murphy, is jointly awarded by MIC and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO) to the amount of €4,000. The scholarship is awarded to a first year Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) student for their exceptional achievement (solo, ensemble and in the community) and talent in the field of traditional Irish music. Applications close on 1 September on year of entry.

Elite Sports Scholarships are available for students who have excelled in their chosen sport(s). MIC offers one Gold Scholarship valued at €4,000, two Silver Scholarships valued at €2,000 each, and two Bronze Scholarships valued at €1,000 each. Applications close on 1 May on year of entry.

MIC’s CAO Points Concession Sports Scheme is an academic entry scheme for performance athletes applying for a full-time level 8 undergraduate programme at MIC Limerick or Thurles. Up to 10 places across all undergraduate programmes are reserved for outstanding candidates who have achieved a very high level of sporting performance and who are committed to continuing to develop their sporting and academic careers.

MIC’s Thurles campus has a range of high-quality facilities to support the equally high standard of teaching and learning at the facility. It underwent a massive regeneration between 2002 and 2005, and further upgrade works were carried out in 2016 and 2017, including the addition of brand new on-campus accommodation.

There is also a GAA pitch onsite and other sports facilities including tennis and basketball courts, and a handball alley. There are a variety of lecture and tutorial rooms, a computer lab, teaching lab, library, dedicated Students’ Union area, student lounge and canteen.

Clubs & Societies

Mary I Students’ Union (MISU) is the representative body of students within MIC. The Students' Union is all about giving students a voice, helping them to use it and enriching their college experience. MISU provides support and advice on academic, welfare and equality issues, and also help new students to settle into life at third-level.

The Students’ Union organises extra-curricular activities for students and offers a broad selection of clubs and societies for students to join spanning the arts, culture, entertainment, education, sports, welfare and charity. The SU also run many student events throughout the year, such as club nights and gigs during Orientation and Freshers' Week.

Information Technology

Students have access to a wide range of IT services, including access to Wi-Fi and computer labs. Printing services are also available across both campuses and ICT Services is also on hand to help students with any IT issues you may be experiencing.

Sports & Fitness

Sport and recreation play an important role in the lives of our students. At MIC we cater for a wide variety of sports and located on our Limerick campus you will find our state-of-the-art, multipurpose sports complex, Tailteann, which includes a gym, weights room and sports hall which can be set up as two indoor soccer courts, an IBA approved basketball court, three volleyball courts or six badminton courts. Accommodation

MIC Limerick

Courtbrack Student Accommodation is a purpose-built unit providing quality self-catering accommodation for first year undergraduate students. The complex, situated on Courtbrack Avenue, is approximately a five-minute walk to MIC’s Limerick campus.

MIC Thurles

MIC Thurles has 36-ensuite bedrooms conveniently located on-campus. Spread over three floors, they provide accommodation for 36 first year students on a single room basis.

Booking

Bookings are taken all year round. However, early booking is highly recommended. We strongly advise students to reserve their accommodation as soon as their CAO forms are completed. Students may only provisionally book one type of accommodation.

Dining

There are canteens located on both campuses, which provide have a wide range of hot and cold options for students to choose from including a selection of cereals, freshly baked scones and pastries, healthy salads, nutritious sandwiches and wraps, and hearty and wholesome main courses.

Fees and Grants

The MIC Fees office provides a proficient, effective and professional service within a friendly environment to all students, staff, and stakeholders, with regard to the administration of Student Fees.

Student Academic Administration

The office of Student Academic Administration assists students to access important information as they progress through their time at third-level. The team will guide you through important processes throughout the academic year such as registration, examinations and graduation, to name but a few.

You can travel to Limerick by bus or by train, both arriving at Colbert Station, which is just a short walk from our Limerick Campus. MIC Thurles is also well serviced by buses and trains.
