Largest Erasmus Programme

As well as being the largest international exchange programme in Ireland (ERASMUS and Study Abroad), UL was awarded best Erasmus program at the Education Awards 2019. The University of Limerick has participated in the ERASMUS programme since 1988 and has links with over 300 partner institutions throughout Europe, offering a wide range of possibilities.

UL has the largest outgoing cohort in Ireland with approx. 500 UL students studying abroad at European partner institutions each year. The semester abroad is approved and academically recognised as part of the student's degree programme at UL.

UL has non-EU exchange partnerships with approximately 90 universities worldwide. Students may apply for an academic placement in any of these institutions instead of an Erasmus placement in an EU university.

Ireland’s Sporting Campus

Sport is synonymous with the very fabric of Limerick. UL is home to Munster Rugby. Our multi-purpose University Arena boasts a top class indoor facility, a 50-metre pool and a separate diving pool. There are over 60 acres of outdoor pitches, with hurling walls and 8 all-weather 3/4G synthetic pitches. Whether you're training for Olympic gold or looking for the next Spin class, there's always something to get involved in, at Ireland's Sporting Campus. UL Sport is the home to all of these wonderful facilities.

The University of Limerick has unveiled the dynamic and inspiring New Glucksman Library, designed to transform the Library and the University for scholarship in a digital age. The new Library has an additional 1,200 study places in a variety of learning styles that brings the total number of library study spaces to 2,200.  Leveraging UL’s tradition for innovation the library is technology –rich with advanced computing, collaboration and communication spaces. The ARC (Automated Reserve Collection) at UL Library is an automated storage and retrieval system.  The facility has the capacity to store c.500,000 books. The ARC is a key feature of the new library, and the first of its kind in Europe.

Launched in 2010, the First Seven Weeks programme is designed to provide strong, enhanced and targeted support to students from the start of their university experience. The First 7 Weeks Hub (located in the Students Union Courtyard) is open 9am to 5pm, 5 days a week during the first seven weeks for students to drop in ask questions, get advice and receive support. The activities of each of the seven weeks are designed around a theme which focuses students' attention on various issues that are important for settling in and thriving as a higher education student. For example; study skills, time management, health & wellbeing, developing critical thinking, writing skills, civic engagement and volunteering. 

The UL Chaplaincy works to meet the many and varied religious needs of a global university campus. It recognises that life at UL is a dynamic, ever-changing experience, which brings all kinds of new opportunities and challenges to students. The chaplains offer a welcoming space and supportive presence to students and staff. They promote an open and caring environment where diversity is respected.

Clubs & Societies

There are over 80 campus-based clubs and societies, and membership is open to all students. Joining a club or society is one of the best ways to ensure you make the most of your time at UL and to meet other students. Because many clubs and societies organise subsidised trips at weekends, it’s also a great way to see the country. Sports clubs range from archery to skydiving and societies from debating to the Tea Appreciation Society.

Sports & Fitness

The UL Sports Arena is a stand-alone facility is also home to the National 50m swimming pool base for the high performance swim unit, the 25M Diving Pool, the National Strength & Conditioning Centre, Fitness Studio, Multipurpose Sports Halls, indoor 3-lane Jogging Track, Sprint Track and various other ancillary and associated services.  Increased numbers which now average 14,000 individual visits per week. The University of Limerick is also home to its own boathouse, sport adventure centre and plentiful outdoor sports facilities.

Accommodation

With 2,700 rooms across six residential villages at University of Limerick, there is something to suit everyone. Each village has a distinctive character with a wide range of facilities suitable for all students. Our six villages vary in price too; this means that there is accommodation on campus to suit all budgets. All villages are located within a 20 minute walk from lecture theatres, sports and recreation facilities and the student centre, the main social hub in residence. Our accommodation make it easy to develop a habit of going to the library as you are only minutes away.

Dining

The university offers a wide choice of venues offering high quality home cooked food at budget conscious prices in a variety of small restaurants, stylish cafés and bar/restaurants which serve food late into the evening. There are 17 places to eat on campus ranging from large self-service restaurants offering good value hot food to trendy cafés offering gourmet sandwiches, great cakes, speciality coffees and juices.

The University of Limerick has five Learning Centres specific to different disciplines which are available for students to access. Most of these learning centres are drop-in, and all located central on campus.
