About Us

Shannon College of Hotel Management, founded in 1951, is Ireland's only dedicated Hotel Management College. We are a college of The University of Galway, with the school of Business, Public Policy and Law. We offer two Level 8 Business Degrees (Bachelor of Honours) and a Level 9 Postgraduate course, preparing students for careers in Business and Hotel Management.

Central to our ethos, is a focus on intensive practical training, extensive business studies and international work placements which ensures students graduate with a Bachelor’s Business Degree and 21 months of relevant experience.

Graduate with Level 8 Business Degrees

Shannon College of Hotel Management offers two Level 8 Business Degrees specialising in International Hotel Management. The Bachelor of Business Studies and the Bachelor of Commerce. These programmes combine a unique blend of hands on practical learning, 21 months of paid international work placement, in-depth language development and intensive business studies. This environment nurtures and supports students in their pursuit of becoming well-rounded, highly skilled, experienced and enthusiastic individuals, who over the years, have proven to, and continue to succeed in many different fields.

Work Placements

Relevant work experience is a key part of our 4 year degree in Shannon College of Hotel Management. Studying at Shannon College offers every student with the opportunity to work, live in and experience the industry during their studies. Students are offered two paid, professional internships with Leading Hotels in Ireland, the EU and Worldwide before graduation. This proves invaluable when students embark on their journeys to their dream job after graduation.

Key Facts

Clubs & Societies

Shannon College offer a wide range of clubs and societies to students who are studying on Campus. Students can get involved in a range of different sporting activities, the college choir, and volunteering as part of the ‘ALIVE’ programme.

Shannon College also have a very active Charity Committee which is run by the students. They organise a variety of events throughout the year to raise funds for a local charity, which is chosen at the beginning of each year. Students organise different events throughout the year to raise funds and awareness for the charity as well as having fun and getting involved as a team.

Students are also given the opportunity to get involved and compete in international business and hospitality competitions where they will get the chance to showcase their skills and passions, work as teams, network and compete against other hospitality and business students around the world.

As a predominantly student driven area, clubs and societies are always being created. Whatever your passion and interests are. Students, as part of the University of Galway will also have full access to the facilities, clubs and societies that the main campus in Galway have to offer.

Accommodation

At Shannon College of Hotel Management we are very lucky to be able to offer all of our Year 1 students designated accommodation. Our organised student housing is located in Castle Gardens, Bunratty Village, Co. Clare. Bunratty village is situated approximately 8km or 10 minutes from the college campus with a bus organised to transfer students to class each morning. It is approximately 15 minutes from Limerick city and one hour from the University of Galway's main campus in Galway city with bus services running regularly.

The village itself is home to Bunratty Castle, and some fantastic cafes, restaurants and bars such as the well-known ‘Durty Nellys’. The village also consists of two hotels which is a great opportunity for the students if they are looking for part time work during their studies. A petrol station and shop are also in the area as well as being situated beside Shannon town which boats many more bars, restaurants, hotels and a shopping centre. Students are well located and within close proximity to neighbouring cities.

Student accommodation In Year 1 will be shared by three students. The houses are comprised of three en-suite double bedrooms, a living/dining room, a kitchen and a garden. The estate is home to our Year 1 students creating a wonderful, safe and close knit environment.

During the subsequent years of studies, students will have the option to choose their own accommodation with a wide variety of options available in, Shannon, Bunratty, Ennis, Limerick and the surrounding area.

Dining

There a number different dining options available to students located next to the campus including shops, cafes and restaurants.

Students receive discounts in many of the food outlets based on and around the grounds of Shannon Airport.

First year students will also enjoy 20 x 3 Course meals in the O’Regan Training Restaurant in the College. This is a cost which is included in first year fees. As well as the option to dine on separate occasions at a nominal fee.

Fees and Grants

The two degree courses offered by Shannon College are included in the Department of Education & Science’s ‘Free Fees Initiative.’

  • To be deemed eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a first time undergraduate student
  • Hold EU nationality or official refugee status
  • Have been ordinarily resident in an EU member state for at least three of the five years preceding entry to an approved third-level course

Student Supports

Shannon College strives to create an inclusive and supportive community for students to learn in. There are a wide range of support systems in place to create this environment.

The College Doctor and College Counsellor provide on-campus medical and psychiatric care to registered students of the university in a professional, courteous, and confidential manner.

The College Student Mentoring Programme allows first year students to settle in and meet their third year peers with ease. The third year mentors are often very helpful in ensuring a smooth transition into university life. They are also a friendly and familiar face for students during their first number of weeks in the college.

‌Starting College is a very exciting time but can also be very stressful and it may take time to adjust to a new stage in your lives. The College Welfare Officer is available to meet with students and help them with this transition at any time.

A Class Year Head who is a member of the college staff is assigned to each year group. This person acts as another point of contact for students throughout their time in the college.
