About Us

The National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) is a purpose-built college located on a 10-acre campus 18 km from Cork city in Ringaskiddy. The college provides training and education for the merchant shipping industry, and the non-military needs of the Irish Naval Service. NMCI offers undergraduate degree programmes, part-time programmes and continuous professional development courses in a state-of-the art educational facility, fully compliant with the most up-to-date international standards and requirements. NMCI is a constituent college of Munster Technological University.

Excellent Facilities

NMCI is a 14,000m2 facility built on 10 acres of waterside campus. Specialist spaces include environmental pool & survival facilities, seamanship workshop, firefighting and damage control, jetty and lifeboat facilities, ship engine room, state-of-the-art simulation equipment in the areas of navigation, bridge training, communications, engineering machinery operations, liquid cargo handling/damage control and vessel traffic systems.



Wide Range of Programmes

NMCI offers undergraduate degree courses in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering and Marine Electrotechnology, Professional courses in Navigation and Marine Engineering, Part-time courses in Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies and a wide range of short STCW training courses.

Diverse Student Body

NMCI students come from very diverse backgrounds and have a very broad age profile. Most come directly from second level schools and colleges however many are seasoned seafarers, customs, logistics, business, finance and IT specialists returning to gain further qualifications so that they can advance their careers both at sea and ashore. The college has a significant proportion of female cadets, 5 times exceeding the industry average. The college also has a high number of international students.

Our maritime studies courses offer you the opportunity to live a life at sea, combining travel with a challenging career and exciting rewards. This career path provides excellent employment prospects with 100% of our cadets being offered work placement and 80% of cadets being fully sponsored by the shipping companies while at college. Our professional and part-time courses allow experienced candidates to progress to senior positions in the areas of navigation, marine engineering, maritime operations, customs, logistics and supply chain management.

 

Student Experience

As part of NMCI’s maritime programmes students are provided with professional training in medical first aid, firefighting, security awareness, personal survival and safety, and interview skills training. NMCI students have many opportunities to take tours of vessels visiting Cork harbour and enjoy guest lectures from the leading experts in the maritime industry. Most students also get to spend between 9 and 12 months onboard a ship, where they can gain a valuable seatime experience. Professionals who are in full-time employment can take advantage of blended delivery of our part-time courses, whereby online lectures are complemented by in-person workshops and tutorials that create a rich learning environment and provide excellent networking opportunities.

Facilities

Marine Engineering

Marine engineering facilities at NMCI include a full-sized working ship's engine room, a fully instrumented ship's control room, a welding workshop, an electrical workshop and a mechanical engineering workshop.

Marine Simulation

Marine simulators at NMCI include full mission bridge simulators, engine room simulators, fleet work simulators, VTS simulators, GMDSS simulators and liquid cargo handling and damage control simulators.

Sea Survival

Sea survival facilities include an environmental pool equipped with a wave and wind generator, rain sprinkler system and thunder and lightning effects, helicopter underwater escape trainer and dive tank. Survival facilities also include lifeboats, jetty, pontoon and slipway with winch facilities.

Marine Communications

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) covers all aspects of maritime communications under the SOLAS convention, from legal requirement and equipment compliance down to operations and testing.

Fire Fighting

Firefighting facilities include Fire Training Unit and Reconstruction & Damage Control Unit to simulate different types of fire and flooding damage to a ship. Built-in control room allows instructors to maintain radio contact with trainees, monitor ventilation and emergency lighting.           

Learning Resource Centre

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is a focal point for students outside the classroom environment. The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is a focal point for students outside the classroom environment. Here students can use the open access computers, read at individual study spaces and browse in the library.

Currently the library has a book stock of just under 7,000 items and this collection will be developed on an ongoing basis with support from MTU Cork and the Irish Naval Service as well as donations of funds and materials from external organisations. The library has a maritime focus, and subjects covered range from law, meteorology and marine engineering to seamanship and navigation.

Student Common Room

The Student Common Room is a room dedicated for student use only. Here students can relax away from the demands of academic life, use the pool table, play music etc.

Sports & Fitness

Weights Cardiovascular Room

The gym is equipped with weights equipment, running machines, rowing machines free weights and cross trainers. It is reserved for students and staff of the college during the college day.

PE Hall

NMCI has a large multi-purpose hall with a playing area of 16.5 metres x 31 metres. It is equipped for basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer. Indoor soccer is very popular with students and staff alike. Sessions are scheduled weekly by lecturers for students or by students themselves at convenient times. The occasional inter-class tournament is run during the academic year and a viewing gallery in the PE hall allows for non-active participation in these tournaments.

Accommodation

NMCI campus is non-residential. Students arrange accommodation privately. NMCI Admissions Office and MTU Accommodation Officer can provide assistance on request.

NMCI Restaurant

We know how important healthy nourishment is for your well-being and how much it can participate in the success of your studies. For this reason, our kitchen team has developed a range of nutritious wholesome meals at a reasonable price. Our food is balanced and varied and includes some self-serving counters offering fresh soups and salads but also a hot special changed on a daily basis. The NMCI Restaurant is bright and spacious with panoramic sea-views and we look forward to welcoming you here as well as your families when visiting.

Student Supports

At NMCI we offer the services of a counsellor on a Wednesday during the academic year in order to assist in addressing the mental health needs of all NMCI students both ashore and afloat.
