Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics for Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering

The Department of the Built Environment & Extended Campus of IT Carlow will hold a Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics on Thursday 10th September 2020 at 2:00pm. A pass (which is set at 55%) in this examination will fulfil the Mathematics entry requirement for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering programme as an alternative to the Leaving Certificate Honours Mathematics requirement of H4.

In advance of the examination, the Institute will be holding an INTENSIVE PREPARATORY COURSE for applicants intending to sit this examination. The course will run for two days in September (Wednesday 09th & the morning of Thursday 10th September 2020). As well as preparing students for the special examination, our lecturer will demonstrate the relevance of mathematics in engineering, giving useful illustrative examples.” 

Please note that this exam is not obligatory for entrance to this programme nor are extra CAO points awarded if successful in the exam.

This Mathematics Exam will consist of one 3 hour exam paper and will include questions on the following topics:

• Trigonometry
• Logs & Indices
• Differentiation
• Algebra

It is recommended that all students sitting this Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics familiarise themselves with the sample paper, as the layout and content of the paper may differ significantly to the Leaving Certificate Mathematics paper layout.

Please note that this course is only open to those candidates who have expressed a CAO preference to study the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering programme in IT Carlow.
