Duration: 4 Years Class size: 32Programme Title: B.Sc. (Hons) in Construction Project Management and Applied Technology
Programme Description:
An understanding of technical sustainable approaches to building is essential in today's construction sector, there is an increasing demand for graduates who have hands-on experience. Many employers consider hands-on experience very complimentary to academic qualifications. This programme integrates the applied technology with the use of a state of the art workshop. This will be integrated with lectures where the learner will develop economic, legal, technical, managerial knowledge and skills. Students will also have the opportunity to take part in project-orientated group work where real-life problems will be tackled. They will learn how to plan, organise and control construction operations and will gain knowledge in all stages of the process – from initial feasibility studies through to design, construction, maintenance, refurbishment and demolition.
Example of Modules:
Modules include Applied Practical Technology, Sustainable Construction Technology, Graphical Communication and Design, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Measurement and Costing, Health and Safety for the Built Environment, Computer Applications, Site Surveying and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Throughout the programme, real life practical projects are used to reinforce the theory, culminating in third year with a major practical project combining all course modules.
Project Management skills are developed in year four with modules such as Financial Management, Contracts and Dispute Resolution, Development Appraisal and Economics, Planning and Programming, Corporate Management and Construction Law Liabilities and Obligations. A dissertation in the area of Construction Project Management will also be undertaken.
Graduate Destinations:
Construction Project Management is a professional field that focuses on each part of the construction process of any built environment. What is Sustainable Food Production?
Sustainable food production is a method of production using processes and systems that are non-polluting, conserve non-renewable energy and natural resources, are economically efficient, are safe for workers, communities and consumers, and do not compromise the needs of future generations.
The agri-food sector in Ireland is worth over €13.9 billion, it makes up nearly 10% of Ireland's exports and provides 8.5% of the national employment. It is vital for the economy and the increasing global population that this sector is sustained and grows.
Programme Description
This programme has been developed to meet the demand for graduates with integrated skills in the agri-food sector. It is science based and covers food production; food processing technologies and sustainable food production across the food chain (farm-to-fork).
Sustainable food production systems include all processes and infrastructure involved in feeding a population: from growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, marketing, consumption, and disposal of food and food-related items.
Graduates are given the necessary skill set for basic employment in the food industry and/or the government agencies who are working to meet the growing demand for quality Irish food.
Programme Overview:
Year One: Focuses on giving students a general education in foundation science subjects. Modules include an introduction to agri-food systems, information technology and communications.
Year Two: Studies focus on plant and animal sciences in the context of livestock management and crop production.
Graduate Destinations:
Graduates work in the food industries (e.g. dairy, meat, seafood, beverage etc.) in roles relating to processing, food analysis/quality and safety, production management, environmental health and safety.
Further Study Opportunities:
Graduates may progress to the one-year add-on BSc in Agri-Food Science at IT Sligo or to the one year add on BSc Environmental Science with Ecology Programme
Graduate Story:
"The best thing about studying at IT Sligo is getting both the practical and theory with every lecture. I have many friends studied environmental science in larger universities and they received little to no practical experience throughout the duration of their studies. The course really prepares you for the real world. I use all the skills learned at IT Sligo every day. A typical day for me includes consulting and liaising with ABP Food Group sites, the Environmental Protection Agency, Inland Fisheries, Local Authorities, Consultants and other companies.”
