Spotlight: Physics with Data Analytics @ DCU

Posted on March 14, 2023

The “BSc in Physics with Data Analytics” is the newest addition to the physics programs in DCU with first students choosing this specialism in 2022. Data Analytics and Data Science are rapidly growing topics in many industries, ranging from the scientific and technological sectors to finance, insurance, and the social sciences. As a physicist, you will be in a unique position to combine practical mathematical problem-solving skills with a deep understanding of the fundamental aspects governing the natural world and all technology. Today many physicists already work as Data Analyst and the increasing digitalization of all sectors promises growing demand.

In recent years, however, due to an exponential increase in the quantity of data collected, there has been a dramatic shift in how we manage and process data. Traditionally, the core components of algorithmic programming and computer modelling were based around the key mathematical tools that arose naturally within our physics degree programs. This is now increasingly shared with newer programming paradigms that incorporate concepts such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. One of the main aspects of Physics with Data Analytics is to prepare students for this novel type of programming on many levels. The course is not only focusing on real life application of data processing but also on future technological developments like new ways of computing (Quantum computing, Nanotechnology), or on how to train artificial intelligence for data analysis compared to “just using it”.

The course is part of a wider project called “DCU Futures” which also aims to diversify the way we teach by replacing regular lectures and exams by blending lectures and online material with challenge based group work and an increased focus on valuable skills required in every walk of life. For instance, you can learn a foreign language in parallel to your physics degree.

The course complements the profile of DCU physics with long established programs: “BSc in Applied Physics”, “BSc in Physics with Astronomy”, and the “BSc in Physics with Biomedical Sciences. To enter the course, you start in a common first year “DC175: Physics General Entry” and you choose your specialism at the end of first year.
