Conor McCabe recently completed the QQI Level 5 Pre-University Arts/Liberal Arts programme at Monaghan Institute, after returning to education to upskill for the future.

“Having left education early, and having worked in several dead-end jobs, I was keen to acquire qualifications that would offer me better opportunities. Monaghan Institute was attractive to me because of its location, its modern facilities, and positive testimonials from previous students.

I chose to study Liberal Arts because I have always had an aptitude for English and History, and I felt the course would equip me with the necessary skills to proceed on to university. Modules on my course included History, English, Classical Studies, EU Studies and Literary, Visual and Performing Arts, along with a variety of other modules designed to build up skills in certain areas – such as Word Processing or Communications. There was nothing I did not enjoy about my time at Monaghan Institute; however, my favourite modules were History and Classical Studies, and it was a particularly enjoyable experience for me when we were studying them.

One of the things I really enjoyed throughout the year, and I think will stand me in good stead in the future, is the development of my academic research skills. I also found word processing to be very useful, as it has enabled me to consistently create quality work. My year at Monaghan has given me much needed confidence in my ability to excel academically, and it has inspired me to pursue an honours degree in 2022.

My advice for anyone looking at courses would be to consider the opportunities each course offers, and to choose something that will give you the best access to a variety of options in the future. I chose Liberal Arts because I felt it offered me a good, rounded education, and a wide range of career options in areas I am personally invested in.”
