Welcome news for students applying for Home Economics Teaching
in St Angela’s College, Sligo
Students interested in becoming a Home Economics Teacher have received the welcome news that their pathway to becoming qualified has been reduced to the shorter timeframe of a Four-year B.Ed. from the previous Five-year programme. This also has a positive financial impact for students and parents/guardians as they will no longer have to pay fees (and potentially accommodations costs) for the fifth year (PME).
The change has been made possible after the Teaching Council recently reviewed their accreditation requirements. From September 2022 the following programmes will be available and will enable graduates to register as a fully qualified post-primary teacher after just four years of study:
School placement and teaching practice takes place in all four years of the courses-
Year One- Two weeks
Year Two- Six weeks
Year Three- Six weeks
Year Four- Ten weeks
For this year’s CAO Applicants who have applied for the Five-year programme, the good news is that, should you secure your place, you will be able to simply transfer directly onto year two of the B.Ed. Four-year programme in September 2022. Upon successful completion you will now be able to graduate in just four years (May 2025), register with the Teaching Council and begin your teaching career!
Current St. Angela’s students who have recently completed year one can also transfer into year three of the new B.Ed. in September 2022 if they undertake additional modules required to fulfil the Teaching Council requirements.
