Two BCFE Graduates of the HND in Illustration Nominated For The An Post Irish Book Awards 2020
Exciting news broke through in October. Two HND in Illustration graduates, Karen Vaughan and Robert Vaughan have been shortlisted for The An Post Irish Book Awards for books they illustrated. ‘An Irish Nature Year’, written by Jane Powers features the beautifully intricate illustrations of wildlife by Robert Vaughan.
The book explores some of the mysteries of nature and answers some of the intriguing questions such as ‘Which birds wear feathery trousers?’ It is filled full of fun facts and images of plants, animals and insects from all over the country. A perfect gift for anyone who loves the natural world around us.
‘Savage Her Reply’ written by Deirdre Sullivan and illustrated by graduate Karen Vaughan is the second nomination at The Irish Book Awards for this amazing team. In fact, their last collaboration ‘Tangleweed and Brine’ swept up as winner of The Young Adult Book of The Year at the same event in 2018. Additionally, in the same year, it won Book of The Year at The Children’s Books Ireland Awards and in 2017, the team scooped the Irish Times Ticket Readers’ Choice for Best Young Adult Fiction.
Best of luck to both graduates, Robert and Karen on their fantastic success.

The HND in Illustration Course Celebrates Recent Book Publications
There has been more cause for celebration recently on the HND in Illustration as both graduate Caoimhe Hennessy and teacher Margaret Anne Suggs, published new books. Caoimhe, who left the course in May 2020, has illustrated “The Mindful Walk”, written by Harriet Beth Carr to promote mindfulness for children. It is Caoimhe’s first published book and it spotlights her bold and playful illustrative style. “Pigín’s Unexpected Adventure”, written by Kathleen Watkins and illustrated by teacher Margaret Anne Suggs is the third in this series, aimed at children. This story sees Pigín off on a trip to London and is beautifully portrayed through Margaret Anne’s vibrant and lively watercolour illustrations.
