Sligo CFE - Community Development

This course will facilitate the learner to demonstrate knowledge of a range of perspectives of Community Development and of policies, procedures and best practice guidelines that support the delivery of effective community work. It is designed to equip learners with the range of skills and knowledge to implement and deliver community development programmes that adhere to the key community development principles of empowerment, participation and collective decision making. This is the ideal starting point if you wish to progress to further studies or gain employment in a variety of community, health and educational organisations.
This course is designed to
Enable students explore the theory and practice of the key areas of community development by addressing a wide range of community and social issues.
Enable students evaluate the need for community development in society and develop an understanding of community organisations and voluntary sectors.
To enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work as an autonomous practitioner and or take responsibility for the work of others in leading and coordinating the provision of quality community development.
Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, or equivalent.
It is preferable for candidates to have a relevant QQI Level 5 qualification (or equivalent) in a social / community related area or relevant life experience.

How the course is taught
SCFE has developed a style of teaching to meet the needs of a diverse community of learners.
We make extensive use of advanced multimedia and internet based technologies to bring subject matter to life and to ensure effective learning.
Whenever possible, we use a Learn-by-Doing approach to make the learning experience more realistic and enjoyable.
We provide learning supports that are tailored to the needs of individual learners.
Progression to Higher Education
Students who successfully complete the course may gain entry to Third Level Institutes and Colleges through the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme.

Please note that all QQI Further Education graduates who hold a major Level 5 or Level 6 award are eligible to apply for any IT Sligo programme through the CAO system.
(One of the following exemptions may apply: (1) Medical Card Holders - €250 (2) BTEA - €200 (3) Grant - €200)

Students who successfully complete the course may gain employment in a wide variety of organisations such as residential centres, family support services, educational organisations & community support projects.

Duration
This is a full-time one-year course (3 Days per week - Mon to Wed) and runs from September to May.
