Posted on May 15, 2023

IADT in conjunction with Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLRCC) have awarded the first-ever sponsored sports scholarships to 10 students.

This funding opportunity celebrates these exceptional student athletes and the role that sports play in their lives.

IADT President, Mr David Smith acknowledged the importance of the initiative and said “The array of sports represented and the engagement of students from across all areas of the campus is to be celebrated. This partnership between IADT and DLRCC enhances the sporting and academic life of our students and demonstrates the continued commitment of both organisations to the wider social, educational and community development of the region.”

In presenting the awards, Councillor Mary Hanafin, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said “These exceptional individuals have demonstrated not only their athletic abilities but also their commitment to balancing their academic and extracurricular pursuits. Our aim with the Sports Scholarship is to enhance their sporting achievements and assist them to excel at the highest level in their sport of choice”.

The recipients come from a diverse array of sports categories including football, volleyball, kickboxing, hockey, taekwondo, hurling, surfing, and rugby and were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants and stood out as top-performers both academically and in their chosen sport.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, said “We are proud to celebrate the achievements of these exceptional student-athletes who have worked hard to excel in both academics and sports. Participating in a sport can impart numerous benefits, making friends, getting away from the stresses of college life, and most importantly, good for our mental health.”
