UCC - Nurturing Bright Futures Programme
Welcome to the Nurturing Bright Futures online course. This programme is all about you and the choices you make for your future. In our logo above, you can see a bright lightbulb with an acorn and an oak tree. At UCC, the phrase 'from a tiny acorn to a mighty oak' symbolises how we nurture our students' talents, helping them to mature into mighty oaks whose fruits help the environment around them flourish. This course is about nurturing your talents and empowering you make the right choices to grow and flourish.
Whether you are thinking about perhaps going to university one day, or if you have already set your mind on starting your third level journey next year, making the decision about which course to take and which degree to work towards can be incredibly challenging. The Nurturing Bright Futures programme will help you acquire the skills and tools you need to make such a big decision and will walk you through the process of finding the third level course that works best for you.
Through the use of videos, podcasts, articles, exercises, quizzes and other helpful resources, these six modules will give you the opportunity to engage with a variety of resources and introduce you to ways and approaches to college life and college degrees.
The Nurturing Bright Futures space will provide you with the opportunity to engage with your future career journey and it will equip you with skills and tools that you can carry into your chosen degree when you start college. It is designed to empower you to start thinking about the decisions that will impact your future. It will help you to develop independent and critical thinking skills and will also help you to make the most of your support network such as your friends, family, Guidance Counsellors and teachers.
What Is It?
This six module course has been designed to equip you with the information you need as you prepare to transition into third level education. We hope it will be especially helpful for those of you who cannot access our campus easily, for a range of different reasons. It is designed to be interactive and for you to engage with the material. It will create spaces for you to undertake self-reflective exercises and will stimulate conversations - with your friends, family, teachers, Guidance Counsellors, and also with yourself - to optimise your university-readiness. This course is all about you and empowering you to make informed decisions and the best choices for your future career.
While this programme has been developed in UCC, most of the content and all of the key learning outcomes will be applicable and transferable to anyone considering third level education in Ireland and overseas. So, no matter which third level institution you may be considering, there are lots of valuable insights and information to assist and optimise your transition.
Life at third level is full of opportunity for you to begin, belong and become the person you want to be. At third level, you will be able to develop and forge the attributes and values that will shape and inspire you and, in turn, shape and inspire the future of our society and our economy. In the video below, you will meet some students who are just a few years ahead of you and who are embracing opportunities to inspire and be inspired. They are actively shaping their own futures and our collective future by leveraging all their third level learning experiences, be that in the lecture theatre, on the sports field, as an activist, entrepreneur, volunteer or artist. This is your learning journey and you are the navigator!
