Discover New pathways into Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Dietetics at LYIT

Posted on November 30, 2020

Introduced last year, LYIT’s three new Health Science courses have shifted the goalposts for students looking to study Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Dietetics.

The progressive North-west institution has teamed up with Coventry University in England to offer students an alternative route into these popular health science fields. All three courses are two-year Level 6 Higher Certificates which lead into the second year of a BSc in Coventry, meaning two years study in Ireland and two years in England.

There are a couple of significant benefits to following this pathway-

Points

The high level of points needed to gain entry into these courses is often a real challenge and can be a barrier for many students. Last year the points required for the traditional CAO courses were-

  • Physiotherapy (566-589pts)
  • Occupational Therapy (533-555pts)
  • Dietetics (578pts).
  • Compare this to the points needed for LYIT’s courses-
  • Physiotherapy (401pts)
  • Occupational Therapy (408pts)
  • Dietetics (316pts)

It is clear to see that achieving the points for LYIT’s courses is more manageable and has opened the door to those students who have the interest and may excel in the sciences but might struggle to reach the 550+ points targets.

Cost

LYIT is one of the most affordable locations in the country to stay and study in. Accommodation costs can be as low as €45-60 per week for your two year period of study. The fees for the courses in the UK are £9,250 per year, however, Irish students can avail of the very attractive student loan scheme to cover these (More info here). SUSI recipients can also still avail of the maintenance element of their grant. Accommodation costs are also quite reasonable in Coventry.
