Schools’ Open Days to colleges around the country can be a great adventure. While most adults think that teenagers off to Open Day are only there to eye up students from other schools, we know that’s not always the case.
Face it, while you might tell your friends you’re here to admire students from other schools, we know what you really want out of the day is more than that. You want a future with prospects, and you know that college can give you that.
You want to live a life where you spend your working days doing things you enjoy and have enough money for what you need and to be able to have enough for the things that are important whether it’s holidays, clothes, cars, sport, gigs. And that’s why you go to college open days – to figure out which course of study will give you your best life.
If that’s what you want, you’ll be happy to know that at WIT we were recently the highest rated institute of technology in the country by the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. 95% of graduates are employed 3 months after graduating. If you’re interested in getting all your study out of the way in one go, we have many postgraduate and Masters courses, you can even study up to PhD if you want. We have 1,000 employer links, and 350 academic and business links globally, so if you want to literally go places, we can help. We’re not a small college – but we do have small class sizes, so while you’ll be one of 2,000 first years, you will get to make friends for life easily.
We hold our Schools Open Day in the WIT Arena – on a separate campus to where lectures take place – because it’s easier for you to move around and talk to the lecturers you need to. Everyone is in the one place. Think Higher Options, but where every stand is about what WIT has to offer. You can visit one of our other campuses another time – visit the Cork Road campus at our March open evening or by book a one-hour campus tour for the campus most relevant to the course you want to do at any stage during the year.
Lecturers
Standing around with no one to talk to very boring for our lecturers, most of their days are sharing their knowledge with students from the top of a classroom. Our lecturers love their work and they love helping people figure out where life is going to bring them. Start out by asking any questions you may have – which could be as small as what does the course title mean, and what do you learn, and what do you go on to do. Even talking about your own interests and which subjects you like can help them help you understand if you’ll like that course or not. Be sure – especially if you’re unsure – to ask if a ‘common entry’ option is available.
Clubs and Societies
Joining a club or society gives you a great chance to meet more people within WIT, Remember, college isn’t all about the books! From drone racing to more traditional societies, we've got more than 60 clubs and societies in WIT. Find out about the range of clubs, and if you don’t see one for you, have a chat about whether it could be possible for you to set one up.
Accommodation team
Waterford prices are very attractive in comparison to other city prices, which will be a bonus for whoever is paying your rent if you choose WIT. Talk to our accommodation team about what’s best for you and enquire about making your accommodation application as our college accommodation is in high demand.
Supports
If there is anything worrying you before starting college, make sure you speak to Student Life and Learning (SLL) and they can provide you with any help that you may need and give you information about the supports that they offer throughout the year. Some of the supports and services offered by SLL include:
Sports scholarships
There are 60 Sports Scholarships available each year. Talk to some of our athletes and sportspeople about how a sports scholarship helped them improve their game – we have a number of categories, whether you’re already lining out for your county or you’re starting out but making strides in a new sport we have scholarships for people at all levels from ‘Emerging’ upwards.
