Progressing your Career with a Masters in Business & Hospitality

My name is Gary Brody and I am a graduate of Shannon College of Hotel Management 2020. The pandemic began around two days before our graduation and unfortunately all of our plans were either cancelled or put on hold. I had been living in London at the time, working in the fantastic Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge. It seemed so strange to go from a full time schedule to not being able to leave your own home for over 6 months.

I had received an email from one of our lectures back in Shannon about an up-coming master’s program at Shannon and I had thought that it was the perfect time to get the very best out of my time at Shannon College as it is renowned for its Hospitality skills and graduates all over the world.

I did the interview and submitted the documentation necessary and was so fortunate to be offered a place back in Shannon. Upon moving home to west Clare, I began my studies with the masters and delved into subjects like Project Management, Intercultural Communications, Hotel Asset Management and Strategy and Innovation Management. The summer school was incredible to undertake subjects such as Lean Principles, Entrepreneurship, and Business Negotiations.

I had never really understood the importance of these subjects when Covid-19 hit the Hospitality Industry. An industry that once thrived was brought to its very weakest point I believe for the first time in our life-time. I am currently finishing my masters with a couple of weeks left.

I am extremely fortunate to be taking subjects such as I.T, Performance and Revenue Management, International Human Resource Management, Research Methods, and undertaking a Business Consultancy Project with my fantastic colleague Cliodhna Egan who graduated with me and is undertaking the master’s degree also.

For the future, none of us can be sure where this pandemic will bring us. My main plan is to use this degree to travel once again hopefully to the United States next year after graduation and continue to enjoy the world that is Hospitality.
