Course of the Week: TU967 - Languages and International Tourism at TU Dublin

Kickstart your career in the wonderful world of Tourism and Hospitality

Travel the world with this Level 8 degree. TU967 Languages and International Tourism at TU Dublin is an exciting four year degree that brings together the study of both tourism and languages. Students will receive a dual qualification in languages and tourism. This course gives you the opportunity to study and work abroad in Year 3. 

This four year Honours Degree programme includes a year abroad and offers a high level of linguistic proficiency, cultural awareness and training in business skills for tourism. It will enable graduates of the programme to function in the competitive but rewarding field of international tourism.

Prospective students should have a keen interest in the culture and heritage of Ireland as well as the countries of their chosen language.

This course allows you to study the following languages as a Major:

  • French
  • German
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Spanish

Or Chinese as an Elective. However, always check with the college to see if there has been any changes. 

 

Entry Requirements:

The Leaving Cert minimum entry requirements for 2021 was 298 points, a drop of 10 points from 2020. Students are also required to have 2 subjects: H5, 4 subjects: O6/H7, H4 in English, H4 in French or German or Spanish or Irish or Italian or Chinese, and O6/H7 in Mathematics.

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency.Applicants for this course should have a minimum IELTS (Academic Version) English Proficiency of 6 overall (or equivalent) with nothing less than 6 in each component.

What You Will Study:

The language modules mentioned above will allow you to develop professional competence in one or more languages through a variety of linguistic, contemporary cultural and translation studies. The tourism modules in this course will introduce you to the business of tourism and explore exciting fields such as sustainable tourism and enterprise development.

Study Abroad:

You must spend Year 3 in the country of your major language. This involves a semester at a partner university and a supervised work placement in the tourism industry of that country. 

Career Opportunities and Progression:

When you graduate you will have preferential access to careers in the fields of international tourism in both private and state sectors as well as in international organisations. 

You could work in heritage management and related cultural areas where strong linguistic proficiency is essential or engage in academic research. You might also work on the market and consumer research conducted by international, national and tourist organisations.
