Ulster University Applicant Shortlisting Changes: Allied Health Programmes & School of Nursing

Posted on October 7, 2021

For September 2022 entry, Ulster University have made a number of changes as to the admissions methods used for applicant shortlisting to our Allied Health programmes & School of Nursing:

Personal Statements

Due to the disruptive effect of the pandemic, Ulster University will not use UCAS Personal Statements for initial candidate shortlisting for our Allied Health Programmes or School of Nursing programmes, unless otherwise stated.

Whilst personal statements will not be used for initial applicant shortlisting, they may be used at a later stage; for example, where two or more applicants achieve the same interview score.

Allied Health Programmes

  • BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography & Imaging
  • BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy
  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy
  • BSc (Hons) Podiatry
  • BSc (Hons) Radiotherapy and Oncology
  • BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy

In May 2021, Ulster University discontinued the HPAT-Ulster exam as an entry requirement to our Allied Health Programmes. For September 2022 entry, eligible applicants will be invited to an online video interview, taking place in February 2022.

The video interview format is akin to the one already used by our School of Nursing and will be hosted by the SONRU / Modern Hire platform. The interview duration is 15 minutes and will assess candidates' suitability via values-based questions to ascertain values and competencies which are associated with healthcare professionals.

Applicants are required to sit one video interview only, whether they apply to one or more Allied Health programmes – except for BSc (Hons) Dietetics which will host a separate interview, detailed below.

BSc (Hons) Dietetics

Eligible applicants to BSc (Hons) Dietetics will be invited to a separate online video interview to that of our other Allied Health Programmes. This means that an applicant applying for both Dietetics and another Allied Health Programme (e.g., Physiotherapy etc), will be required to sit two online video interviews. The format for the Dietetics interview will be similar to the Allied Health Programmes interview and will also be hosted by SONRU/Modern Hire. The interview questions will be more relevant to Dietetics specifically.

BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science

Applicants to BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science will have their personal statements reviewed for interview shortlisting purposes. Paramedic Science will have its own interview process, with the School hoping to conduct these in-person and on campus (subject to Public Health Authority guidance). If we are unable to host in-person interviews, the interview process will be hosted by SONRU/Modern Hire.

BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing / BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing

Applicants to our BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing and BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing programmes will undertake a separate online video interview using the SONRU / Modern Hire platform to determine eligibility for September 2022 entry.

Like entry to September 2021, Ulster University and Queens’ University Belfast will jointly use the same interview platform. This means that if an applicant applies to Nursing courses at both UU and QUB, then they are only required to sit the one online video interview.
