What is Biomedical Design?

Biomedical engineers have a strong impact on the way we live. Healthcare and engineering professionals work collaboratively to develop innovative ways of improving our lives with new medical devices and machines. Working with clinical medical practitioners, biomedical engineers develop laser systems used in eye and cardiovascular surgery.

The sector employs over 28,000 people in 160 companies in Ireland. This innovative programme was developed to address the needs of the medical technology industry. It will equip you for diverse career paths, working as part of a design team with medical professionals, in hospitals, in research centres or in the manufacture of exciting new medical devices in Ireland and internationally. The course integrates the study of anatomy and physiology with traditional engineering subjects.

Subjects include Biomechanics, Solid Modelling, Automation, Biomaterials, Medical Device Design, Bio-Modelling and Analysis, Electronic Applications in Healthcare and Medical Device Manufacturing. Project work is carried out in conjunction with industry and surgeons from the Children's Hospital Crumlin, Tallaght Hospital, the Mater Hospital and Santry Sports Clinic.
