GMIT Announces Virtual Open Day Complimented by Weekly Live Q&A Sessions

Posted on April 23, 2020

Includes free access to online profile assessments from GMIT Careers Office

GMIT is pleased to announce a new ‘Virtual Open Day’ online experience for prospective students and their families. The new virtual platform goes live on Friday, 24 April at openday.gmit.ie and features information about all campuses and courses, advice and guidance for students, personal welcome videos from academics and support staff, and a special video message from GMIT President Dr Orla Flynn. From Friday week, 1 May, the Virtual Open Day will be complemented by live online Q&A sessions at www.gmit.ie/livechat every Friday from 2pm to 4pm until the end of June where GMIT staff will answer queries on courses and services.

GMIT President Dr Orla Flynn says: “The Virtual Open Day is not a one-off live event, rather a micro-site that will be open 24/7, with no obligation to connect in at any specific time. We invite you to browse our campuses and courses, and get advice on careers, accommodation and our range of services. We look forward to hearing your questions at our live Q&A sessions every Friday from 1 May.”

GMIT Schools Liaison Officer Lorraine Cunningham and GMIT Marketing Officer Karen Smyth explain: “We were aware that there were many disappointed students and parents who were unable to attend our Spring Open Day due to COVID-19 restrictions and we want to reassure you all that we are still here for you, so please do connect with us on our ‘Virtual Open Day’ any time between now and the Leaving Cert.”

“While nothing will replace the experience of visiting our campuses, and being in the one physical space together, we hope that this Virtual Open Day will give prospective students and parents a ‘feel’ for GMIT. We invite you to join us at openday.gmit.ie and at www.gmit.ie/livechat and together we will try to get through this challenging time until we can welcome you onto our campuses again”.

A unique feature of the Virtual Open Day is the “Careers Corner”, a valuable tool for any Leaving Cert student who may be unsure of their course and career choices. It features a series of presentations that help students to discover their personality type and match it to suitable courses and careers.

GMIT Careers Officer Bridie Killoran, says “We understand that matching your personality type, interests and motivators to suitable courses will lead you towards a rewarding career. As part of GMIT’s Virtual Open Day Careers Corner, we are giving students access to these online profile assessments free of charge for a limited time. Students can then follow up their results with a member of our Careers Office. The commercial fee for these profile assessments normally is in the region of €150 per student, but on this occasion GMIT will pay all costs because we feel it is important to offer support and security to students in these challenging times."

In the live Q&A chats on Friday afternoons from 1 May, prospective students and their parents can get quick feedback from GMIT staff about GMIT’s wide range of courses in Agriculture, Business, Construction, the Built Environment and Engineering, Design and Creative Arts, Science and Computing, Tourism, Hotel and Catering, Humanities and Heritage, Nursing, Health Sciences and Social Care, Furniture Design and Technology, as well as information on the CAO process, student supports and campus facilities.
