Are you a Registered General Nurse and Interested in becoming a Midwife?

Posted on July 28, 2023

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) are delighted to support the HSE in their upcoming recruitment campaign for 2024 intake for the Higher Diploma in Midwifery course. This Higher Diploma is facilitated by Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda (RSCI Hospitals Group) in partnership with DkIT and is open to graduate General Nurses who are interested in pursuing a career in Midwifery.

Midwifery is a rewarding career providing the support to women and their family, pre-conception, during pregnancy, childbirth and up to six weeks after birth. As a Midwife you are with parents at the most special time of their lives and are involved in welcoming their new babies to the world. Midwives recognise pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period as a healthy and profound experience in women’s lives and use their professional knowledge, skills and attitudes, to competently support the woman and her family, working autonomously and within a team.

Aimee Kirwan who worked for almost 2 years as a General Nurse, is now working in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and is a current student on the Higher Diploma in Midwifery programme in DkIT, said, "Although the programme is intense, especially during theory weeks with exams and assignments and working full time while also studying, I have absolutely no regrets choosing this career pathway and feel so privileged to be part of such a special moment in a couple’s life". Aimee added “It’s so special watching a mother holding her baby for the first time”.

Sorcha O'Brien, who is a qualified Midwife for 4 years now, previously worked as a General Nurse for 4 years before deciding to go back to learning and complete the Higher Diploma in Midwifery. Sorcha said "In 2018 I did the H-Dip Midwifery in DKIT, I had previously trained and worked as a Nurse in Dublin. This was a big change for me going to work in a new hospital, study in a different College and change my career path – In the end it was the best decision I could have made! Our classes were small groups which made them informal and very interactive which made learning easier. The hospital training was a steep learning curve but I worked with some wonderful Preceptors over the 18 months, who helped me along the way and are one of the main reasons I stuck with Midwifery. I love supporting parents in pregnancy and being part of a family’s journey to welcoming their Baby. " Sorcha who is very passionate about her career as a Midwife has progressed in her Midwifery career and is now Clinical Midwife Manager (CMM2) in Maternal Health and Wellbeing.

The National Recruitment Service will launch the Higher Diploma in Midwifery (Student Midwife Recruitment scheme) Programme after 12 noon, Friday 28th July 2023. Applications will close on Friday 25th August 2023.
