CR400 Accounting at CIT

Posted on October 7, 2019

This is a four year (level 8) Accounting degree programme.

There is no requirement to have studied Accounting for Leaving Certificate.

Placement

Please note that in 3rd year the students have a semester of placement. This was introduced in 2018 and has been a tremendous success. Many of our 4th year students have already secured a contract to start a graduate position next August/ September.

Entry to Accounting programme

Students can enter the Accounting degree programme in CIT in two ways:

  1. CR400 (Level 8) Students applying for this course know that they want to do accounting and get the points (CAO points: 316 in 2019;  308 in 2018) for this programme (approx. 50 students)
  2. CR021 Business Studies (common entry) (Level 7) This is suitable for students that are not sure if accounting is for them or may not have the CAO points for CR400.Students apply for and do general business studies in first year (CAO points: 250 in 2019; 240 in 2018). In 2nd year these students have the choice of doing either an Accounting, Management or Marketing stream.

Those choosing the accounting stream join the CR400 class in third year and are converted over to the CR400 (Level 8) programme. They graduate with the exact same qualification as those that came in through CR400 after the 4 years.

So please advise anyone interested in Accounting in CIT to choose CR021 in their level 7 options and CR400 in their level 8 options of their CAO application form.

Class Size

The class sizes in 1st and 2nd year are approximately 50 students. This increase to 100 in 3rd and 4th year when they are joined by the CR021 students.

Exemptions

After any Accounting degree, to qualify as an accountant, graduates have to do further professional accountancy examinations. Based on modules studied in college (and achieving an appropriate grade in each of those modules), graduates are offered exemptions from some of these examinations. We are very proud of our excellent exemptions here in CIT for the CR400 programme. At the moment our exemptions are as follows:

  • Chartered Accounting (ACA) our graduates are exempt from CAP1. These are the best possible exemptions for a third-level degree.
  • ACCA our graduates have only the 4 final exams to do
  • CPA our graduates have only the 4 final exams to do.
  • CIMA our graduates have are exempt from all of the exams at the Operational and Management Level, so they have the case-study at the Operational and Management Level and all of the Strategic Level to do.

Employment prospects

At the moment we do not have enough graduates for the employers out there. Due to this demand, we are taking in more students. In 2018/19 we had 70 students in 4th year, in 2019/2020 we have 100 students in 4th year, and we will aim to keep it at that.
