Design and Development of lab-scale GBES system prototype
Ireland’s carbon reduction commitments of 70% by 2030 are ambitious and require that all potential decarbonisation pathways are explored. Wind Energy Ireland has stated that the country needs an additional 9,000 MW of onshore and offshore generation, but also that sufficient energy storage systems are required to avoid the significant losses resulting from dispatch-down due to grid constraints. One of the energy storage systems that has not been fully explored in Ireland is Gravity Battery Energy Storage (GBES), despite successful implementation in other countries.
