Course Summary
The B.A. (Honours) in English and History is a 4 Year Level 8 Programme. It offers students the opportunity to read the greatest works of literature in English alongside the most important and influential events in Irish, European and world history.
Students on this programme develop a deep knowledge of literature in English and history, and more generally, advanced understandings of human society and culture at the local, regional and global level.
The structure of the programme gives students a solid foundation in both English literature and History in Years 1 and 2, before allowing them to specialise in either English or History, or to keep a balance between the subjects in Years 3 and 4.
The programme equips students with the essential tools needed for the 21st century by nourishing critical thinking, developing communication skills and fostering creativity. It also prepares graduates for life after college by teaching them employability skills through special career skills and career practice modules.
Students are expected to achieve a minimum 242 CAO points to be successful on this course.

The Student
Career Interests
This course is typically suited for people with the following Career Interests. If these interests do not describe you, this course may prepare you for work you may not find satisfying.
Linguistic
The Linguistic's interests are usually focused on ideas and information exchange. They tend to like reading a lot, and enjoy discussion about what has been said. Some will want to write about their own ideas and may follow a path towards journalism, story writing or editing. Others will develop skills in other languages, perhaps finding work as a translator or interpreter. Most Linguistic types will enjoy the opportunity to teach or instruct people in a topic they are interested in.
Social
The Social person's interests focus on interacting with the people in their environment. In all cases, the Social person enjoys the personal contact with other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.
Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.
Career Progression
The BA (Hons) in English and History meets Teaching Council requirements for English and History. A significant proportion of graduate of the programme continue to teacher-training at primary and post-primary level, and both English and History are key subjects on the primary and post-primary curriculum.
Graduates of this programme find employment in many different fields such as primary and post-primary teaching, arts and heritage, civil service, marketing and media. Graduates can also go onto further postgraduate study in a wide range of areas.
