Course Summary
Within the Modern Languages programme you study two modern European languages to degree level. You can choose between French, German, Irish, Italian, Russian and Spanish. Apart from French and Irish all languages can be studied from both advanced and beginners level.
French studies develop transferable skills (excellent writing and oral communication abilities, critical thinking, extensive analytical skills) that are highly sought after across a range of sectors (the creative industries, public service, tourism, publishing, interpreting, teaching, journalism, broadcasting, the Diplomatic Service, etc.). The study of French language, literature, history, politics and philosophy is a hugely enriching intellectual experience and it also leaves graduates very well placed to succeed in a wide range of professional contexts.

Career Interests

Linguistic
The Linguistic's interests are usually focused on ideas and information exchange. They tend to like reading a lot, and enjoy discussion about what has been said. Some will want to write about their own ideas and may follow a path towards journalism, story writing or editing. Others will develop skills in other languages, perhaps finding work as a translator or interpreter. Most Linguistic types will enjoy the opportunity to teach or instruct people in a topic they are interested in.
Career Progression
Graduates have exciting careers in a wide range of fields such as cultural and creative industries, translation and interpreting, journalism and the media, publishing and arts administration, diplomacy and tourism, marketing and finance, as well as second and third level teaching or the civil service.
Many go on to take postgraduate courses in areas such as business or law for which a languages degree is an excellent background.
