Course Summary

The module is offered in association with the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The GAA was founded in 1884 and is an All-Ireland sporting and cultural organisation that today has a presence on all five continents. It is Ireland’s largest sporting organisation, the principles of which are based on an amateur ethos. It is a volunteer led, community based organisation of almost 2,500 clubs and 1,000,000 members. The GAA organises and administers a range of sports including Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie, Handball and Rounders. The programme has been carefully constructed to acknowledge and develop the leadership and management skills required by those involved in team management and leadership roles in a dynamic sporting environment.

The Student

Career Interests

This course is typically suited for people with the following Career Interests. If these interests do not describe you, this course may prepare you for work you may not find satisfying.

Social

The Social person's interests focus on interacting with the people in their environment. In all cases, the Social person enjoys the personal contact with other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Career Progression

The aim of this module is to compliment the values of the GAA and support its managers and coaches to learn new ways of managing and leading in a sporting context. The programme has been carefully constructed to acknowledge and develop the leadership and management skills required by those involved in team management and leadership roles in a dynamic sporting environment.
