The Student

Career Interests

This course is typically suited for people with the following Career Interests. If these interests do not describe you, this course may prepare you for work you may not find satisfying.

Realist

Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

Career Progression

Graduates will have many requisite scientific and transversal skills and attributes necessary to work in industrial science and related careers. Graduates wishing to enter into the rapidly expanding life science sector, can work in settings such as laboratory science, manufacturing, quality assurance, validation, regulatory affairs, technical operations or analysis.

With a strong emphasis on acquiring practical skills and competencies plus the opportunity to undertake modules such as laboratory science skills, job readiness, laboratory professional practice, and placement, employability is a key feature of this programme irrespective of the ATU pathway followed.

Employed graduates of this programme would be ideally suited for further upskilling opportunities whilst employed, for example with the possibility of progressing onto the ATU Sligo Level 8 add-on workplace-based programme, BSc Hons Applied Industrial Science. This makes the student/graduate an attractive addition to the organisation where retention of the employee can be achieved through a defined career progression training plan.
