Course Summary

During the Food & Agribusiness Management degree, you’ll learn how the principles of economics and business management apply to farming, food production and marketing. You’ll gain an understanding of how the Irish and international food systems deliver food products and services that people want, and how farmers and food manufacturers can produce profitably, while also taking care of the natural environment.

The four-year degree provides a unique opportunity to understand both business and science, focusing on the agri-food sector – Ireland’s largest indigenous industry. You will learn skills that can be used across a wide range of jobs both within and outside the agri-food sector.

STUDENT VIEW – CLODAGH DOLAN

The Irish and International food industry has always interested me. While working in the sales and marketing department of our family company, I discovered my interest for the business side of the operation, so I decided to study Food and Agribusiness Management at UCD.

UCD had always been at the top of my list of colleges, and it didn’t disappoint. The campus, student life and opportunity to travel abroad made UCD stand out to me and the university has an array of clubs and societies to join. During my final year I held a position on the UCD Commerce and Economics committee where I got to meet people from across the university and work on exciting events such as Comm Ball, UCD’s largest annual black-tie event.

During my third year, I had the chance to study abroad at the University of Illinois, which is ranked in the top 10 Agriculture Schools in the United States. My experience in Illinois was eye-opening and has contained some of the best memories of my time at college. I was lucky enough to receive a Student Scholarship Award to attend the University.

During the second half of third year I completed my PWE with Keeling’s Retail. The experience allowed me to gain a real understanding of the FMCG industry. One of the highlights of my placement was travelling to Holland to complete a project for the company. I was delighted to be awarded a Grant Thornton PWE Excellence award for my placement at Keelings.

The Student

Career Interests

This course is typically suited for people with the following Career Interests. If these interests do not describe you, this course may prepare you for work you may not find satisfying.

Enterprising

Enterprising people like situations that involve using resources for personal or corporate economic gain. Such people may have an opportunistic frame of mind, and are drawn to commerce, trade and making deals. Some pursue sales and marketing occupations. Many will eventually end up owning their own business, or in management roles in larger organisations. They tend to be very goal-oriented and work best when focused on a target. Some have an entrepreneurial inclination.

Naturalist

Not surprisingly, some aspect of the natural sciences will run through the Naturalist's interests - from ecological awareness to nutrition and health. People with an interest in horticulture, land usage and farming (including fish) are Naturalists.

Some Naturalists focus on animals rather than plants, and may enjoy working with, training, caring for, or simply herding them. Other Naturalists will prefer working with the end result of nature's produce - the food produced from plants and animals. Naturalists like solving problems with solutions that show some sensitivity to the environmental impact of what they do. They like to see practical results and prefer action to talking and discussing.

Career Progression

Our graduates have an excellent record of finding employment in various sectors, including: Food processing, Food distribution and marketing, Financial services, Consultancy services, Agri-food media, and Farm management.
